9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC
BAND,
AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE THE LIGHT?:
I believe I first heard of him through the obvious Frank Zappa
connection. First few songs I heard were probably "Willie the Pinp" and
"Muffin Man". When I started to seriously obsess over Zappa I knew that
I had to finally listen to Trout Mask Replica and give it a listen with
my own ears. I did not know quite what to think the first time around.
I was shocked, scared, excited, and I haven't been the same since. First
song I seriously enjoyed on that album was the almost poppy "Ella Guru".
Now it is probably "Hair Pie Bake 1 + 2". The way the band interacts with
the music is breathtaking and it remains my favorite album by the Captain.
A few months later I bought Safe as Milk and very much enjoyed that as
well. Compared to Trout Mask this was child's play, but the work of an
extremely tuneful and talented child. "Trust Us" is one of my all time
favorite Beefheart songs. Since then, I have explored almost all of his
albums (save for 2-3) and enjoyed all of them in different ways. His music
is among the most complex, misunderstood, and challenging there is...but
it also is among the most rewarding.
