5. WHAT YEAR DID YOU BECOME A FAN?: uh. 1998
9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC
BAND, AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE THE LIGHT?:
a friend and i found zappa's waka jawaka album in his closet. we put
it on and laughed for hours. trumpets were funny to us. we used to sit
around and chuckle/dance to the old goldeneye soundtrack. well i though
waka jawaka was just wonderful.. so i went to my local record store to
purchase it. nothing doing. but a man suggested i get bongo fury only because
it had beefheart on it. i said "hot deal" and bought the record.
i loved it. .and.continued ...to go back to that record store
in search of some beef. i eventually found (and yes this was my first real
beefheart experience) live in london 1974! i was into some shitty music,
and didnt realize how bad it was. i loved it and played it for all my friends.
they thought it was ok. i searched the internet for information on captain
beefheart. everyone there told me to get troutmaskreplica. so search i
did. and i eventually found it. i enjoyed the first side because i had
been used to them slightly, from amazon.com's real audio files. i wish
i heard the record first, and i wish i could really remember what i thought.
i sort of went along with it because i thought i should like it, thinking
im a pretty smart kid, and this is a record for smart people. i grew out
of that quickly and appreciated the album for its combination of aggression,
beauty, and overall delivering of something so wonderful, and in a non-
- cliché way. i went on slightly appreciating the album for a while
until songs began to unfold and make more sense. they still unfold for
me. the album gets better... and i hear more with every listen. nothing
has ever made me feel the way troutmaskreplica and lick my decals have
made me feel. the two albums are almost always in my tape deck.
10. NUMBER OF BEEFHEART GIGS SEEN, AND WHICH YEARS:
never seen him live. but thanks to bootlegged video and audio i can
get a peek. unfortunately i'll never see him live. but he'll never see
me live either. what a pity.

be guitar or soprano saxophone. depends on the situation. playing the piano
