9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC
BAND,
AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE
THE LIGHT?:
I discovered the Magic Band in 1967 when Safe as Milk first came
out. Particular song was probably
"Yellow Brick Road" and/or "Abba Zabba".
10. NUMBER OF BEEFHEART GIGS SEEN, AND WHICH YEARS:
Only saw them live once, must have been either 1969 or 1970 in
Pasadena, CA.
They were headlining a show that also had Little Feat (with Lowell
George at the time) and Ry Cooder.
Terrific show. And the price was right, tickets were 99 cents
(sponsored by a local radio station in LA)
11. ART SHOWS VISITED: none
12. ANY CONTACT WITH DON?:
YES!! When I was going to Humboldt State University in
Arcata, California, back in 1976-77, I lived in Eureka, just south of Arcata.
I went to the local health food store in town one day, and there was Don,
shopping in the store. He was living up in Trinidad, just north of
Arcata, at the time, and was in town doing some shopping. I spoke
very briefly to him, and he was quite pleasant.
13. MUSICAL ABILITY / TRAINING:
played the clarinet/sax for a time in elementary and early high
school, but gave it up.
