FIRE PARTY
CENSUS RESULTS &
ANALYSIS
Many thanks to Stewart Osbourne for all
his time and effort in conducting, compiling, analysing and providing the
census results.
Many thanks to everyone who took the time
to respond to the census.
Census conducted April
1999
Responses were received from 51 members of the
Fire Party.
Ages ranged from 16 to "50+" with an average
of about 38/39.
Those who replied had been fans of Captain Beefheart
for anything from 1 to 33 years,
with an average of 21years.
Only 24 of these people were lucky enough to
have seen Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band
perform live,7 have been to exhibitions of Don
Van Vliet's paintings and 8 have actually met him.
A frankly astonishing 32 out of these 51 people
are musicians of one type or another,
and the average number of albums owned is a hefty
1,200.
Our favourite Captain Beefheart albums (in the
time honoured tradition
of reverse order, naturally!) are as follows:
12 - Bluejeans & Moonbeams
11 - Unconditionally Guaranteed
10 - Mirror Man
9 - Ice Cream For Crow
8 - Strictly Personal
7 - Safe As Milk
6 - Shiny Beast
5 - Spotlight Kid
4 - Clear Spot
3 - Doc At The Radar Station
2 - Lick My Decals Off Baby
1 - Trout Mask Replica
Although the first two and the last two positions
were fairly predictable, I think some of the positionings
in between are quite surprising and indeed some
of the votes were very close; particularly so between
Doc At The Radar Station and Clear Spot, and
between Ice Cream For Crow and Mirror Man.
It is worth noting that none of the individuals
who responded actually ranked the albums in this order!

Favourite Beefheart albums
analysed by age group
I have divided the responses up roughly into 4 groups
by age:
1) Those born prior to 1954
(no particular reason, it just worked out that
way - incidentally there were 9 people born in '53, suggesting that is
by far the most popular year for an FP member to have been born.....
if anyone gives a shit?!)
2) 1954 - '59
3) 1960's
4) 1970's and '80's
As you will see there are some marked variations
which which will inevitably reflect such factors as previous musical backgrounds,
when /how the individual first encountered Beefheart, contemporary musical
scene etc. etc.

It would seem to me that maybe the oldest group were
least receptive to Don's 1980's renaissance / possibly the "new" Magic
Band?
The second group, most of whom presumably discovered
Beefheart at the time of Trout Mask Replica, are the most fond of Spotlight
Kid, I would suggest for reasons of contemporanity?
Similarly those born in the '60's are more fond
of Shiny Beast and Doc At The Radar Station, probably for similar reasons,
although they are the least impressed by Lick My Decals Off Baby (maybe
something to do
with the absence of the second guitar?) and Strictly
Personal (perhaps because of the production?)
However I find the results of the fourth group
the most fascinating; particularly since they will have come to Beefheart
with the freshest ears are the least likely to have been affected by other
associations.
Generally the feelings of this group are the
closest to the overall results although they are the least impressed with
Spotlight Kid and most interesting of all (imho) they are actually the
*most* impressed with Safe As Milk.

The results of the votes
on our other favourite acts.
No surprises who's at number 1 I'm afraid - 'though
I don't believe we've ever discussed the act who came second on the list....
Of course this section would have benefited from
my having received a few more responses; however the fact that we're clearly
such an eclectic bunch doesn't help, with a grand total of 218 different
acts having been
voted for.
Once again in reverse order:

Beck
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds

I wonder if anyone amongst our membership actually
owns and enjoys albums by all 44 of those acts?
Personally I own at least one album by 27 of
them but I'm sure many of you can beat that....
