30/9/06 - real shame that as I caught them in Bristol and they were brilliant. Anyway, have just had a fun 20 minutes listening to the MP3's on your site - very off the wall, and very interesting ! Thanks ! |
|
26/9/06 Is that the "zip on your head" in the picture? Very cool. - phil, a little blue and green with envy |
21/4/06 Pleasing to see that you are now a fully developed northern artist person with a great family !! I still have fond memories of you coming to Iveridge at cross in hand with your hohner violin bass and distortion pedal for a jam !!........circa 1972?,....... Dave Cass, Tony Waters and Graham Beeney !! Well, I learned a lot from you as you were the eldest member of the group, especially thankful for the musical insight that came to me from you via Tony! (work that out).Frank Zappa, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane, Loudon Wainright and many more may not have come my way if not for you ! I can still remember listening to "Clear Spot" on tape in the bath at age 15 and it was great, and seeing Beefheart in Brighton 1974 ish, with my mates "big brother" thanks for the lift. 'not seen Graham Beeney since my first wife scared him off in 1977, 'still love guitars (isnt ebay great!) but keep them in the bedroom, 'me, still growing up, second marriage, 4 children between us, isnt life strange, 'love to Tony and Kay if you see them, 'respect to Ben! |

12/11/04 How do I get a copy of the Cd? By the way I used to go to Cross in Hand primary school, the Whaling Snails used to play our school discos! |

16/9/04 Your love of Salvador Dali rubbed off on me - I still remember the prints you had in the Flat - although I've never found any. Not looked hard enough I guess. I would be really interested in getting a copy of a Hot Zobs CD if there is one - let me know how much if it exists. |
20/8/04 As a big beefheart fan, i was trawling the websites on him, not expecting to find a Colne connection! As I have been twice just recently - as that is where my girlfriend is - hmmmm odd??? Nice to see such a site & the 73 anecdote...saw him on the last tour @ York...& it's me on the bootleg, at the front shouting out "oh man that's so heavy!" - yu know the track. Was at the exhibition in Brighton too.Hmmm Magic eh? |
|
9/7/04 Anyway your site is a a fun way of spending a couple of hours (when I should be working) |

20/4/02 Saw your site via an online review of Arse Inferno. Your lists of fave Fireparty acts was basically a mirror of my own record colection. I've been doing underground, experimental pop for years now, I'm always looking for soulmates to trade CDs, cassettes and e-mail with. You can find out more about me at www.semperlofi.com |
|
17/4/02 You tell us a lot about yourself, except (interestingly) your real name. We're the same age, you and I. Well - you begin the year, and I catch the tail-end of it, in the fashion of America in any war. We also share many heroes. Actually, I have an embarrassing number of heroes, but we overlap with a frequency that suggests a similar outlook. As to your main man: well, I'm still working towards Capt. Beefheart - I know I'll get there before give up. For the sake of a generalisation, you calendar front-enders develop quicker. Not only am I a late arrival, but I'm also the family sprog, so I'm maturing with a reluctance that suggests I'll have Capt. Beefheart in my grasp by the time I'm 70, along with John Coltrane, Henry Cow and Stockhausen. I've already accomplished the "rock" side of El Beefo: 'Moonlight On Vermont', 'Electricity', 'Bluejeans & Moonbeams', etc., but I stand on the precipice of undiluted Don Van Vliet like an Alcopopper before his first neat bourbon. At age 17 when I first heard him (and thinking 'Led Zeppelin' was as radical as it got), I was confused by the seeming clash of avante garde meets brutal crudity, and I guess that first impression stayed with me to some degree. His early stuff with Ry Cooder et al. is easily digestible, and Ry himself is a little squeamish about the later Beefheart. Anyway, thanks for your little website. I've enjoyed leafing through it and chiming with your opinions on what I consider to be musical gems. Long may you consider it worthwhile. |
19/4/02 I got hooked up with your website via some mail that Bret Hart sent me and enjoyed browsing in your music guide--always interesting to see what kind of stuff turns people on (especially when they have broad tastes and are articulate enough to explain why they like what they like). I was surprised by a couple of names that I didn't see: Massacre (Fred Frith) and This Heat, two of my own favorites which I think would fit in very nicely with your interests. You did say that there wasn't enough room for everyone so perhaps they just missed the cut. Or I could be completely mistaken--that's happened to me plenty of times... I also listened to the tunes which Bret made available on his Expanded Duets Series Page and thought that the ones you did with him were very succesful. And besides that, I liked them! |
|
7/2/02 He is not only a man of versatility but also has an excellent (but somewhat 'old fashioned' taste in music). There are not that many fans of both Virginia Astley (what happened to her), Kevin Ayers, Han Bennink (did see him on many occasion in the Amsterdam Bimhuis), Carla Bley, Captain Beefheart (listen to the 'horrendous' Beefheart tributeband), Ry Cooder, Fred Frith, Henry Cow, X-Ray Spex (Poly Styrene, where are you), and the laid grate Frank Zappa. |
9/1/02 just seen your site it's great, made me miss the old days in a big way. Really pleased life has turned out well for you and I can't believe you stayed loyal to Beefheart. You look from your photo as though you are well, happy and perhaps found your niche? .... |
|
3/1/02 I was delighted when your web page appeared.I'm glad to say steeton is my home also,I was born in Airedale 24 years ago and lived in the village my entire life, it's good to know someone else appreciates the place as much as me!Once again many thanks for putting our home on the WWW you made my day!!! |

7/11/01 I found the site great fun.....- not all the music is really my cup of tea .....I remember you getting into Beefheart - and I remember your "green" trench coat, the "airline" bag you used to carry everywhere - because it was the "latest craze" - and of course the Hairy Dog Joke. Glad to see you still trotting that one out in all its glory. Looks like you've found a lovely part of the country to live in... Anyway, great to have come across you again. |

27/10/01 I love "Shipwreck" especially & "Beggar" is great too. Really, I think your art is just stunning. If I had millions of dollars, I'd happily bankroll an art gallery/exhibition for you. |

12/9/01 Just perusing some music sites/sights?, and happened by yours. Interested in your pice about Edgar Broughton. You're right about the reason for their being late for that gig because of a guy about to jump from a bridge. It was the bridge over Archway road. The reason I know this, is that I was cycling with Edgar in the early "eighties" in north London and we stopped there and he told me the story (the same as you've told it) but with a little more detail. You'll be pleased to know they were successful and the guy didn't jump - well, not that day anyway!........ Any way, just a short line to say, nice site, nice taste in music, I was justresspassing through, but couldn't resist a little "ramble", take care. |

13/9/01 All the best |
29/8/01 Funny name, funny guy, eh? Your initials mean(in German) a female undergarment. I just enjoyed your mp3 of "Hoboism" which was delicious! I've been quite a fan of the madcap several decades, like you...... |

18/6/01 I wandered across your website while surfing. (searched "Heathfield"). Had a good laugh reading about Russell / Homer et al. from Heathfield Sec. You got it absolutly right. Brought back a lot of memories of my time there too. (Well, those I didn't lose in the concussion...that concrete pillar was hard !) Most entertaining thing i've read on the web in days. Well done, it's a heck of a good site. |

12/5/01 here is Annie, the Dixey chicken from Adelaide, Australia. At last I got round to looking up your website from Malcolm's recommendation. Amazing to see what you look like these days. Love your pictures, like your cars - great to hear you have a good life.Love, Annie |

2/10/00 about 2 years ago i stumbled on your captain beefheart website after being tipped off by someone on a tom waits listserve that i frequent. firstly, let me say it is a lovely site, a nice introduction to a budding van vliet fan like myself. thank you for providing such a service. |
8/8/00 Just been on your site and you've done a brilliant job. Love the old Citroên, I learned to drive in a Visa and took it all over Germany. I went over there after I had my license for less then three month and it was very strange to be driving on the other side of the road and even though I was brought up over there it was quite a shock to the system. Anyway, keep up the good work with love Dirk |

11/4/00 Quite like the sight. Yes I too got the hang of ambiguous ambidextruous musically altercacious stuff round about the time that Mister van Vliet was first strutting his stuff. Let me know when the next 4fathers gig is gonna B. B cause I wanna B there and share and B aware. |
7/3/00 The latest (99) paintings are absolutely gorgeous. You're getting better and better with every new painting! I encourage you to seek a gallery or rep for your work, it's just excellent! Keep it coming, Ben! I can't wait to see the new stuff, and of course, my girlfriend and I look at Kiss everyday. With admiration. Richard |
|
3/3/00 I wanted to write and tell you how much I admired your paintings, especially Blue Dream .Do you sell them? Or prints of some kind? I am also a Beefheart fan (paintings and music) which is what brought me to your site. I am listening to one of your MP3s now. I hope you'll post more. Is the trout mask replica painting yours as well? It's outstanding. |

3/2/00 Still have to work through the paintings which look very interesting. My sides are still aching from laughing at the teacher stories. I'd forgotten about all those crazy times at school. Weird tyes and camouflaged moccasins.......great days! |
7/1/00 Many thanks for the link; I'll put one up to your site over the weekend. I particularly enjoyed your A-Z. |

25/6/99 Like the site ! I notice your scan of The Venue ticket. I was there as well ... |
9/6/99 Just a note to say how much I enjoyed looking at your paintings. I figured most people drop by without commenting, but I must say, you are a fine painter (very Van Vliet-esque, which is a good thing, of course). I especially like Kiss. Very nice indeed! |
|
24/5/99 I've just been checking out your latest updates to your site, and noticed the ticket stub to David Breuer's lecture which I was also at. I wonder just how many of us were there who would later get to know each other over the Internet? I think Paul Brown of SSTS was there as well, and possibly Steve Froy. It was a fantastic lecture, wasn't it? I'm just downloading your newest mp3, cheers |
23/5/99 I just had a look at your web page - very interesting! I particularly like your paintings - Bardo Beings Desiring Birth is strangely unnerving. I take it you've read the Tibetan Book of the Dead? |

30/4/99 I daresay there's a bit of Van Vliet influence |
|
30/4/99 Seriously,it is very good. You ought to get yourself a" hit o meter" to register how many people look at it. |

30/4/99 What I did see was pretty interesting, however. I also noticed you're a fellow Ornette Coleman fan. BODY META and TONE DIALING are two of my favorite albums |
|
29/4/99 I have downloaded most of your paintings. They are lurking some where in the temporary internet files until i can decide where to put them. I think the image quality of the paintings is quite staggering . Not too sure about the mug shot though mate |
29/4/99 congratulations with starting a home page! the outtakes are a good choice with 'hoboism' as the natural must hear of course! |
