9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND,
AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE THE LIGHT?:
I don't exactly remember how I discovered him. It was definitely
on my own (no one played me his stuff or anything), but I think I became
interested in him thru Zappa's association. I had only heard one
track with him on it, Muffin Man, and I didn't realize then that he was
even playing on it. I probably thought that, because Zappa was good,
Beefheart would be good. I was right!
The song with the most significance for me would probably be Plastic
Factory, as, before getting Safe As Milk, I had only listened to TMR (which
I love, but the sound quality is just soooo terrible), and that song made
me realize just
how cool DVV was to throw in all that stuff with the harmonica.
Other than that--which has the greatest significance to me--, I'd say that
pretty much every song has some sort of meaning to me.
10. NUMBER OF BEEFHEART GIGS SEEN, AND WHICH YEARS:
None. Unfortunately, I was born after he retired from the music
business.
There is no longer a Santa Claus on the Evening Stage.
11. ART SHOWS VISITED:
None.... yet.
12. ANY CONTACT WITH DON?:
Well, I dreamt that he was cooking in my kitchen once. I can't
remember what he was cooking, but it was in a big boiling pot, and he was
humming Summertime by George Gershwin.
13. MUSICAL ABILITY / TRAINING: .
5 or 6 years of drums (which I still play), 6 years of piano (which
I gave up last year), and 2 years of violin (which I gave up when I was
8, despite my mother's protests that I looked like "such a little gentleman"
while I played).
14. ANY OTHER INFO YOU WISH TO ADD?
My life is primarily influenced by music. As an observation when
listening to tapes of me percussifying upon my tubs, my playing style is
a sort of cross between the rumbling, thumping, flailing style of Drumbo,
and the funkier sound of Tim Alexander (or so I'd like to believe...).
