All are available to poets, and are used by poets, though rarely to the same extent. The key point is the purposes to which imagery is put. Metaphor, simile, allegory, personification, metonymy (attribute for whole) and synecdoche (part for whole) all involve imagery.

    41. Theosophy and the Emergence of Modern Abstract Art By Kathleen Hall = At the turn of the nineteenth century, a movement in art emerged that was a response to higher awareness of cosmic truth. Modern abstract art was the visible manifestation of spiritual ideals professed through the teachings of Theosophy and other wisdom lore....It seems more than coincidental that four distinct artists, at about the same time in history, were all influenced by the teachings of Theosophy and manifested their spirituality through their art....Kandinsky, Kupka, Mondrian, and Malevich can be considered as initiates
    42. Russian Symbolists Painters We can see how abrupt the turn away from realism was if we look at the painting of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856-1910). In Mikhail Vrubel’s "The Demon Seated" (1890). The subject of this painting is the hero of Mikhail Lermontov's Romantic narrative poem of the same name. Symbolic examples of the existence of a world beyond that of the everyday. Note also the background, which is filled with such symbolically-laden images as sunset, fire (which stands for the end of the world), as well as aggressively non-realistic flowers. Mikhail Vrubel "The Six-Winged Seraph" (1904). In this painting, Vrubel uses an image derived from Alexander Pushkin's poem "The Prophet" (1826). The notion of the artist as the mediating force between the phenomenal and noumenal worlds was immensely popular among the Russian symbolists. Viktor Borissov-Mussatov (1870-1905) spent his formative years in Paris working in the studio of the French symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Borissov-Mussatov favored mysterious feminine figures whose poses suggested some kind of otherworldly concerns, as in his painting, entitled "Spring" (1901). His palate, filled with greens and blues is typically symbolist.

    49. Symbolism in Visual Images When one chooses to cross the boundary between visual symbolism (pictures), and textual symbolism, there are a few factors that should be noted. As the old adage goes "a picture is worth a thousand words." Visual symbolism can be complex, because often times there much more going on in the image than in, say, a given paragraph. Color is a major part of pictures too, serving to layer meaning on top of meaning. For example, in St. George Fighting the Dragon we can see a green dragon situated below and in front of George, who is wearing gray armor, astride a white horse. In the background we can see a woman in red and white with folded hands, presumably in prayer.

    51. Poetry and Private Language ABSTRACT: The paper discusses three theses in relation to poetry: (1) the Inadequacy Thesis: language is inadequate to capture, portray, do justice to, the quality and intensity of the inner life; (2) the Empathy Thesis: descriptions of certain kinds of experiences can only be (adequately) understood by a person who has had similar experiences; (3) the Poetic Thesis, which has two parts: (a) only through poetry can we hope to overcome the problem of the Inadequacy Thesis and (b) the difficulty of (some) poetry is at least partly explained by the Empathy Thesis. The paper argues that there are important truths underlying each thesis but that it would be wrong to connect this kernel of truth with a Lockean view of language, and in particular with a view of language as 'private', in the sense implied by Locke and criticized by Wittgenstein. The romantic conception of poetry, to which the theses are related, neither relies on the Lockean view nor does it succumb to the Wittgensteinian view.

    55. English Language Arts Poems by Langston Hughes use symbolism, description, and figurative language. Both poems deal with and send the same message on dreams. "A Dream Deferred," encourages one never to put dreams aside, where "Dreams" encourages one to hold on to dreams. The two poems differ in the use of similes and metaphors, and also in their rhyme scheme. Overall, the poems are wonderful examples of poems that can be compared and contrasted.

    67. Symbolist poetry There are no general introductions or pages dedicated to symbolism, so pages of individual poets will have to suffice. Symbolism is a concept difficult to define, and thus making a list of symbolists is also quite problematic. Very generally put, symbolists tend to support the idea of a connection between first, consciousness and the outer world and second, nature and the spiritual world.
