Definition of symbolism
Symbolism is a 19th-century movement in which art became infused with exaggerated sensitivity and a spooky mysticism. It was a continuation of the Romantic tradition. Anticipating Freud and Jung, the Symbolists mined mythology and dream imagery for a visual language of the soul. More a philosophical approach than an actual style of art.

Painting Poetry: Using Visual Representation as a Response to Literature
Interpreting a poem using visual representation encourages students to think critically about what a poet is trying to say and the means he or she uses to convey these ideas. It also helps students better understand their own beliefs about a poem. As students create visual art and then write interpretations of the completed pieces, they enter into a relationship with the poem and construct meaningful connections by integrating personal experience, language, writing, reading, and creativity.

Visual and verbal symbolism in Greek tragedy it would be a mistake to consider the visual
dimension in isolation. What I want to suggest in this article is that it is especially the
interplay between the two dimensions, between the verbal and the visual, between language
and performance, that gives much scope for symbolism in Greek tragedy.

Rosemary A. DiNardo I obtain my imagery through intuitive means. My intent is to bypass left brain
operations in order to access imagery from the realm of dreams. Lately, the image of the

between two worlds, symbolically uniting the conscious with the unconscious, the rational
with the irrational.

The Eye in the Hand by
Frank Adair, M.D.
The image itself is quite popular today in many forms such as amulets, talismans, wall
plaques, statuary, luminaries, votives, and recurrent images in drawings and paintings. To
understand this symbol and how it has appeared throughout history in religious traditions
and mythology, we must understand the image against which the hand was designed to
protect.. The vitality of the symbol of the Eye is illustrated in the mythology of the
Egyptian gods, specifically Ra, Hathor and Horus. The Jewish amulet is known as the
Hand of Miriam and the Islamic amulet is known as the Hand of Fatimah. The eye in the
hand takes on a deeper meaning in the form of the White Tara, often referred to as the
Mother of all the Buddhas. The worship of the goddess Tara is one of the most
widespread of Tibetan cults. Tara had her roots in India in Hindu mythology.

the culture of the Middle Ages. His sources include various Eastern traditions — both
Chinese and Indian.

Symbolism of the Objects in Dreams
The messages contained in dreams are typically conveyed as symbols, which represent an idea,
concept or emotion that is difficult to put into words. The presence of symbols is one reason
why dreams appear to be so mysterious and even nonsensical to the waking mind, but once we begin
to unlock this symbolic language, we find that dreams are often profoundly meaningful, engaging
our feelings in a way matched in waking life only by arts such as poetry, painting and music.

- lynn-cox.net As a visually impaired artist,
I am intrigued by the inter-relationship between written/verbal language and the visual
impact of the image. Everyday, a large amount of artwork is described to me by other artists
and non-artists. (The amount of primary knowledge I get about artwork is limited because
either I can't touch it or I wouldn't gain enough information from touching it). In the past,
I have had difficulty in convincing some artists that I can appreciate visual artworks
(even if a lot of interpretation is left to my own fertile imagination). However, artists
give examples of exhibitions or events they have seen to their peers on a regular basis
and few comments are made about the validity of the description, interpretation and/or
evaluation.
