The Javanese Ikats are strong, bright, subtle, and wonderfully soft; they are a pleasure to wear. A stripe of a bolder pattern is woven into the fabric, to be worn in the fold at the front. The cloth is rolled down over the fold, at the waist (for a man) or under the armpits (for a woman) to fasten it. The roll forms a tube, open at one end, which is still sometimes used as a makeshift purse.
