The subtlety and intense colours of the pattern from the central area of a handmade carpet. Many 'persian' carpets consist of a central area which repeats a pattern until it is interrupted by the borders (there are often up to 7 of these), suggesting a window on to a tiling to infinity. It is sobering to realize that this technique far pre-dates the idea of a window on a computer screen.
