THE DEMO ARCHIVE IS CLOSED FOR A WHILE. IF YOU WANT COOL DEMOS, WHY NOT CHECK SLIPGATE CENTRAL'S LISTINGS?

The Demo Archive THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

Yes, it's finally here. The section you've all been waiting for. The Demo Archive.

This section of NFTF aims to archive any and all demos recorded by "name" players on the UK Quake scene, including demos such as those taken at the recent Shoot And Surf Quakeathon.

Demos are listed by player, with a short description and a link. Enjoy. Thanks very much to Nick, aka Groffy, for providing the FTP space.

If you want to add a demo, please either upload it to http://www.poison.co.uk/nftf/upload (may not be available yet) or email it to Nick as an attachment. Please read the Demo Suggestions page before recording demos!

NOTE: Some of these demos may have been recorded with WinQuake, and so will not work with normal Quake: if a demo you download does not work with regular Quake, this is likely to be the case. Instead, you need to have installed WinQuake, the Win32 Quake executable. It's fairly small, and has many benefits including client-side demo recording and automatic memory settings, so I've decided to include both it and demos that require it in the archive.

X-Bagpuss THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

BGDM4S3A (224 Kb)

Bagpuss playing against one Skill 3 Reaperbot on DM4. Bagpuss is a very good player, and it shows- compare this demo to Danold's demo of the same contest.

BGDM4S3B (155 Kb)

Another attempt of Bagpuss' at the same challenge. I've included this second one because it's entertaining, Bagpuss is still very good, it's small, and it's quite a good demonstration, if you look closely, of the respawn sequence on DM4.

BAGDM6S1 (195 Kb)

This is a demo of Bagpuss going up against 4 Skill 1 Reaperbots on DM6, one of Scary's competitions. Yes, it's a bot demo, but Bagpuss is an entertaining and skiilled player and this is a fun demo to watch.

BoyWonder THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

BWGRDM2 (720 Kb)

BoyWonder:QPD, maintainer of Quake Perfect, and Groffy, aka Nick of the UKCL, work at the same place, and recorded a few demos of their frequent deathmatches. This is a close game on DM2, with some exciting and skilled play, and is well worth watching- it's an unusual demo because of BW's occasionally odd play and his unique control configuration (no strafe?).

BWGRDM3 (649 Kb)

Both Nick and BW love this level, and it shows. Excellent, very close play across the whole of DM3. Well worth watching.

BWGRUKOOLDM2 (181 Kb), BWGRUKOOLDM3 (493 Kb), BWGRUKOOLDM4 (877 Kb)

These are a series of demos of BoyWonder playing Groffy across the series of levels designed specifically for the UK One On One League, the UKOOL. i've been looking for a series of levels showing the tricks and traps of the UKOOL series for a while, and these fit the bill nicely.

The UKOOLDM2 demo is the shortest, which is a pity since this looks like a well-designed level. Evidently, Groffy has played this level a lot more than BW, and he kicks him all over it. It's a pity, because there isn't really enough play time here to learn the level, although it's a fun and interesting demo.

The UKOOLDM4 demo is the opposite. I've got no idea what went wrong here, but the demo ends up Lava 20, Humans -5. This is a useful and very watchable demo, but the problems with the level design (very high R_Speeds in the main room) and the inconclusive play flaw it.

You can check out some more of BoyWonder's demos in one of his Fragbook entries.

Choadsmoker.CP.KOD THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

CHOADDEM (493 Kb) (WINQUAKE)

Choadsmoker has long been one of the finest guns of the Clan Pendragon, and this demo, recorded on DM2 against a skill 3 reaperbot, certainly shows why. Basically, Choaddem is a demonstration demo, and if you want to see some fairly funky stunts on DM2, including the tricky "U-turn jump", this is the demo to watch.

DC.Danold THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

A word of explanation: although Danold is French, he's a member of DC, an English Clan, and so I've included him. I haven't got all his demos here- more can be found on his homepage.

DANOLD (220 Kb)

The demo Danold recorded for one of Scary's contests, showing Danold against a Skill 3 reaper on DM4. Some superb play, and an extremely exciting demo to watch overall.

SKILLDAN ( 1.24 Mb)

Skill 5, the player who nearly beats Danold in this thrilling 1-1 DM4 demo, is, unless I mistranslated Danold's homepage, a keyboard player. If so, he's amazingly skilled.

XBIGONE ( 1.07 Mb)

The first of Danold's XBig series (hence it's Xbigone...), this is a large mass deathmatch demo Danold recorded on DM3 with some of his friends in France. There are a lot less DM demos than one on one or 'bot demos around, and this is an excellent example of the genre.

XBIGTWO (1.74 Mb)

As above , but in DM6. Danold, like his Clanmate Sujoy, is one of those irritatingly skilled people who always, always wins...

MM.Ddarfnax THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

DDARF_1 (280 Kb)

This demo is a surprise. The Mere Mortals are not known as contenders for the likes of Clan Corpus or Demonic Core, but if Ddarfnax is anything to go by, they have a few surprises up their sleeves.

This is a masterful demo on DM2, against team playing Reaperbot 3s, and is short but spectacular. The teamplaying bots are a nice touch, and Ddarf achieves the ultimate accolade in making difficult play, like the infamous "U-turn jump", look easy.

DC.DD THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

DDDM2 (1.2 Mb)

I've only been able to find one demo by the more reclusive DC member DD, so here it is. This demo shows DD against some Skill 1 Reaperbots on DM2- ok, perhaps not that much of a challenge, but this demo has some useful playing tips for DM2, and some entertaining play.

Fragga THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

FRGDEMO1 (311 Kb)

Yes, it's Fragga, universally acclaimed as one of the best, if not the best, modem players in the comntry. Sadly, the only demos he's been able to record are against Reapers. Frgdemo1 shows Fragga playing against a Skill 3 Reaper on DM2. There's some ecxellent play here, and you can probabally learn more about playing Quake from this demo than all the tip page on the 'net, but DM2's architecture makes it a poor level for Reaperbots, and it shows, with Fragga rarely even slightly stretched.

FRGDEMO2 (263 Kb)

A better demo- again, Fragga is playing a Skill 3 'bot, this time on DM4. This level is much better for Reapers and much harder to play against them, and so this is a more interesting and exciting demo. Worth watching for Fragga's inspired use of the grenade launcher alone. It's interesting to compare this demo with Danold's, above.

Unzip both Fragga's demos to c:, not \games\quake\id1.

FK-Fuckall THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

FASUJDM2 (741 Kb)

This demo, taken at the Shoot And Surf Quakathon, show Fuckall in a mano-a-mano struggle with the infamous Sujoy. Sadly, thanks to DM2's respawn sequence, this demo isn't much of a contest, and mainly serves to show how the DM2 sequence spoils the level for 1-1 play.

FASUJDM4 (760 Kb)

Another Shoot And Surf demo, Fuckall against Sujoy, on DM4. This is a much more interesting and even game, with some superb play on both sides, although Sujoy beats FA by quite a wide margin.

FA-DM2 ( 879 Kb)

A 'bot demo, showing FA playing against four Skill 2 Reapers, this demo is a good showcase for FA's considerable skill.

SPG-Groffy THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

GRBWDM3 (1.1Mb)

Yes, it's another one on one game with Groffy (aka Nick, of the UKCL) versus BoyWonder. This is a really, really good game, with Groffy demonstrating some very fancy tricks (Quad rocket jumps, midair battles and others) and a lot of useful tricks for playing DM3. Great fun.

GRBWUKCL1 (471 Kb) (WINQUAKE)

This demo's fun both because of the excellent (if occasionally a little slow) play and because it's the only one I've seen so far recorded on a non-id software level, UKCLDM1. If you want to learn the tricks of the level this is certainly a good and fun way to do it.

How about some more non-standard level demos, people? UKOOL*, anyone?

Ql-JnrStorm THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

STORMJNR (411 Kb)

Yes, it's proof that Quaking runs in the family, as LordStorm's son JnrStorm kicks his father around DM2. Man, this is scary- his rocketjumping is better than mine...

A word of explanation: JnrStorm is only six. Yes, really.

DC.Jibsta THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

JIBDM41 (219 Kb)

DC. Jibsta was the winner of the Uk Single Player Championship, and this demo shows that he deserved his win. Playing against one reaper on DM4, it's short, it shows speed, style, and tricks that I've never seen before: although there are a lot of DM4 demos in the archive, this is definitely one of the best.

Keeper.CP.KoD THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

KEEP1DM2 (323 Kb), KEEP1DM4 (237 Kb)

Keeper, former leader of HTS and now top Clan Pendragon member, is considered one of that Clan's greatest assets. These demos, recorded against Reaper 3s, show why: although he doesn't quite have the speed or situational knowledge of the absolute best, like Sujoy or Fragga, he's very good, and he uses a lot of the same tricks.

As always, the DM4 demo is better. The main flaw with these demos, should I have to suggest one, would be that many other people have recorded a DM2 or DM4 demo against bots, and some are even better players than Keeper.

CP-Ledge THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

LEDGE (1.3 Mb)

One of the three demos of a big deathmatch at Shoot And Surf. Ledge plays very well here, winning the level over some formidable competition, and provides an exciting game to watch.

Ql-Lordstorm THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

LSDM2 (756K)

One of several demos of LordStorm, Rawmeat and JuniorStorm (yes, LS's son) deathmatching. I personally enjoyed this one more that LSDM6, partially because I think DM2 is intrinsically a more interesting level than DM6 to watch, and partially because in this demo RawMeat and JnrStorm team up against LordStorm, putting him under more pressure and providing much more entertaining and spectacular fights.

LSDM6 (711K)

Another demo of Storm, Meat and JnrStorm playing, this time over DM6. It's quite exciting stuff, but Jnr's presence makes it difficult to tell who is doing well against whom, and Storm rarely seems at all challenged. However, it is interesting to contrast this game with RawMeat's view of the action (Meatdm6).

The Nomad THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

NOMAD ( 1.9 Mb)

Look, I'm out of practise, alright? And I did play better than this later on...

Yes, it's me, spending most of my time at SNS's big Deathmatch running around trying to kill Ledge and Lord Storm with a shotgun. I've included this demo for a couple of reasons (and ego certainly isn't one of them). Firstly, it's worth having a demo by someone who's not so good here, both for the purposes of comparison and to allow people to identify flaws in their play that I may share (there are a lot of flaws to choose from...). Secondly, and more selfishly, I'm hoping that someone who's a lot better than me might be able to give me some tips on what I'm doing wrong here and how I could improve my play.

Hey, what's a webpage for if you can't be selfish occasionally?

CC-Rawmeat THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

MEATDM6 (716 Kb)

This is the other side of the Lordstorm/Jnrstorm/Rawmeat deathmatch on DM6 in LSDM6. DM6's size is both an advantage and a disadvantage: the competitiors are contstantly fighting, but the action becomes a little repetative. Other than the interest of seeing Storm's style from the other side of the gunbarrel, the same comments apply to both MeatDM6 and LSDM6.

RAWSUJ (482 Kb)

Yet another SNS demo. Here Rawmeat is playing Sujoy (again) on DM4, and, frankly, getting wiped out. For Sujoy's side of the story see his section below.

This demo is a little unfair to 'Meat, who is a very good player. If you want to see how good he really is, watch one of the SNS Deathmatch demos (Ledge, Nomad, or Reapbig).

MA-Reaper THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

REAPSPT2(950 Kb), REAPSPT4 (498 Kb), REAPSPT6 (616 Kb)

These three demos show Reaper playing CP.Spirit, the MCW admin, on DM2, DM4 and DM6. For excitement value, they're probabally the best of the SNS one on one demos, since neither player is using the respawn sequences of the levels and the two, Spirit and Reaper, are fairly well-matched in ability.

REAPSUJ (309 Kb)

Reaper versus, yes, Sujoy on DM4. Some very good play, although this demo was cut off around half way through by forces unknown. However, the half that is left is well worth watching.

REAPBIG (1.8 Mb)

Reaper's perspective on the big SNS deathmatch. Reaper has a very fast, exciting style, and this in particular is a joy to watch.

REAPRAW (414 Kb)

Reaper takes RawMeat on on DM4 in this deathmatch, which is fast, exciting and a joy to watch. Whilst Reaper doesn't quite have the bot-like brilliance of Sujoy, he's very, very good, and he and RawMeat are well matched. In particular, Reaper's situational awareness and his navigation of the level are superb.

Sujoy THE UK QUAKE NEWS PAGE

DCQPD (1.5Mb)

One of the best deathmatch demos I've seen, featuring some brilliant teamplay, witty dialogue, and unbelievable skill from Sujoy and his Clanmate Nightwing, totally destroying QPDs Ving and Danman on DM4. Worth watching for the dialogue alone. Get this demo.

Suj, please record some more deathmatch demos?

SUJDAN (1.18 Mb)

Another brilliant demo from Sujoy, for once being seriously tested in brilliant one on one game against his Clanmate Danold. The playing is superb, but it's the tactical skill and bluff and double-bluff that really makes this demo absolutely brilliant, edge-of-the-seat watching.

Did I mention it's, er, brilliant?

SUJRAW ( 0.57 Mb)

Sujoy's side of the Sujoy/Rawmeat 1-1 on DM4. Worth watching to marvel at how one man can be this good. I'll give you a hint- 'Meat frags him once.

SUJREAP ( 1.3 Mb)

Sujoy's side of the Sujoy/Reaper 1-1 on DM4. A more even, very long game with- yes- some brilliant play, again, from both sides.
