Jan.10. Tom Dutton issues first ASTRA circular.

Jan. end. The United States Air Force Base at Prestwick lends a 'boilerplate' Mercury capsule, and a replica spacesuit, to Sandy Glover and me for Glasgow University Charities Week. The capsule was concealed during the week in a sawmill at Anniesland, and painted by moonlight, with stencil brushes, by Jim Coombes and myself, before appearing on a USAF lorry (by courtesy of Lieut. Roy Hagen, head of the USAF Prestwick Motor Pool) in the Charities Day evening parade. It wasn't officially ASTRA business, but it's the only time so far that we've been able to pretend we owned a spaceship.

Feb.7. First official ASTRA meeting, at G.U. Observatory.

Mar.15. 'Space and Art', by Ed Buckley and myself. Sandy Glover and I were at that meeting in evening dress, with our partners (Maureen Galis and Mila Rocho) for the Science Faculty Ball, while Ed had come straight from work and was in Glasgow Corporation Transport uniform. Chairing the meeting, Archie Roy said it was our most formal to date, and that remains true to this day.

Apr.17. By request of Maureen Galis (who wasn't there this time!) Dr. Roy allowed us an observing session in the University Observatory, using the 8" refractor.

June. Open Day at Royal Aircraft Establishment, Bedford, reveals 1961-64 high speed wind tunnel programme to a develop a Waverider shape for a Mach 6 airliner. (See 1995).

Sept.25. Discussion meeting; current space developments, Geneva Room, Green's Playhouse. ASTRA applied for affiliation to Glasgow University Union and began meeting there monthly in room 4, with monthly Council meetings hosted by Oscar and Margaret in Hamilton. Fireworks parties there on or near Nov. 5th became part of the tradition for a while.
