email: Jan. Oscar
produces first issue of Spacereport, intended as a monthly
newsletter. The first two issues reproduced press cuttings,
the third was a print-out of Oscar's simulated Moonlanding
on the Strathclyde University computer. However, the next
issue wasn't to appear until 1969, as part of the
Interstellar Project. ASTRA had now
undergone a major change of format and was primarily a
student society, but for some reason, wasn't gaining any
MORE student members. What would happen when the present
ones graduated? Oscar and I worried about this and Oscar
tried (without success) to find another venue outside the
University. I felt that a major project for publication was
the answer, and in discussion with Ed
Buckley,
Archie
Roy and
others I had formulated 'The Interstellar Project',
extending the powerful format of the discussion meetings
into a series intended for book publication. The topic was
to be 'The first phase of interstellar colonisation, out to
12 light- years'. Apr.7.
Inaugural interstellar meeting, Dr.
Roy, 'Will
There Be Suitable Planets?' Apr.21.
Prof.
Nonweiler,
'Will There Be Suitable Ships?' May 19. John
Macvey, 'Life, As We Know It'. June 23.
Andy
Nimmo, 'Who
Will Go to the Stars, and Why'.
