A technical committee had been formed to create a satellite tracking station, to investigate the space probe explanation for long-delayed echoes in the first instance, and later perhaps natural explanations. The committee had four members, and at a crucial moment, when we were just days away from commissioning the station, two of them were transferred out of Scotland by their employers - one of them taking his transceiver with him. Another transceiver was acquired, but it wasn't compatible with the power pack already built for the first one.

By courtesy of Jeri Bell of NASA (see cover, Jan. 1987 Spacereport, we saw the launch from the VIP area and were given a comprehensive tour two days later, including the Viking Lander in assembly and the Titan launch pad.

Aug.15. ASTRA-London suspended; SPECTRUM founded as new London society. The ironies of this were not lost on us.

Oct. By now it had become clear that our application to become a company was in difficulties, but not why. This began a very difficult patch, in which two troublemakers were trying for takeovers, one of the society and the other of the Technical Section. Fortunately they couldn't agree.
