In China two thousand years ago, bronze mirrors were made that had a very special property. When light was reflected off them onto a wall or other light surface, an image - typically, of a Buddha - could clearly be seen. This corresponded to the image moulded on the back of the mirror, but no evidence of this image could be seen on the polished front. Versions of these ancient 'magic' mirrors were later made in Japan (below).

In the west, it was not until the last quarter of the 19th century that scientists discovered the secret of how they worked, and how they were made. During the production process, the surface was 'rolled', and an impression of the back design forced through to the front - but invisibly, as the impressions were minute. Magic mirrors were used for religious purposes.
