When someone asks you what 'The Internet' is, what do you tell them? Many people
confuse the World Wide Web (WWW) with the Internet, when in fact the WWW is just one
component of many which go to make up the phenomenon known as the Internet. Chance
is, many of the students that you teach already have more Internet hours than you, but
don't let that put you off! With some patience, the rewards are worth it. |
| An example of a page on 'the
Web' is shown above. Recognise it? In fact there's a whole range of resources
which are of use to us as teachers. The first thing to remember is that a little
effort pays dividends! Don't be put off or daunted by the various facilities and
tools available - you'll be surprised at the similarities between them. In no
time you'll be employing a diverse range of software to enhance the teaching and learning
activities that take place within the classroom. And don't forget to share them with
others via the same resource! So, what are the components of the Internet useful to
teachers? Briefly, they are 'Internet Mail', 'the World Wide Web', 'UseNet
Discussion Groups', 'File Transfer Protocol' and 'Chatting and Conferencing'.
