+ 2 sets from Picklepuss playing Floyd, Traffic, Beatles, Dylan and more....
Fountain, 30th Oct - Halloween
Brian, Mick, Pat, Greg, + David Weston, guitar, of Bathtub of Adventures website!
1.Stranger>Franklins, Easy Wind, Loser, Cassidy, Dancin in the Streets
2. After Midnite, Speedway, Scarlet>Touch>Fire, UJB, Werewolves of Tottenham, Shakedown.Opening set from Picklepuss, new band w/Pat from the Charlies:
Feeling Alright(Traffic), Fearless, Pigs on the wing pt1(Floyd), I've Got a Feeling (Beatles),
Jesus Just Left Chicago(ZZTop), Sweet Home Alabama (Skynyrd), Wish You Were Here,
Pigs on the wing Pt 2 (Floyd), Get Back(Beatles)Interval set from Lucky Hopefuls.
Supposedly this was a fancy dress do, tarts'n'werewolves or something. But the Charlies seemed to have left their frocks at home, and the tutus in the audience were outnumbered by the tiedyes - the busiest I've seen the
Fountain, partly because as well as Halloween it was a leaving party for Michael, who had organised the band's shows at the pub. Stranger and Franklins were a powerful opener, the Stranger nicely paced and very funky and an irresistible ten-minute Franklins that had people dancing and whooping right from the start. The other Set 1 highlight was the always reliable
Dancin, this time launched with some rapid-fire keyboards from Pat and distinctive staccato lead work from David, whose solo went seriously Tweezerish for a while- now let's have the whole thing!
Fire got a more relaxed rhythmic treatment than usual, but a long Uncle Johns jam was a great conclusion with some intricate
and again rather Phishy guitar interplay. After ritual lycanthropy, Mike was presented with the last ever
Charlies/Merl Saunders shirt. Luckily he also demanded and got, a Shakedown encore. Overall, a great night out and free buffet too. Also on the menu, the latest addition to the band, the Cosmic Chicken which descended again tonight,
sang to us a while and then flew on.

From: Chris Adams <ChrisAdams@compuserve.com>
One set only (55 mins) : Feel like a stranger; Bertha > Good Lovin'; China
cat > Rider; Uncle John's band > Eyes of the World.
This city centre festival has become a bank holiday fixture in recent
years, concentrating perhaps not surprisingly on the "fab four". The city
centre is sealed off and perhaps 200,000 visited the event. In addition to
the 6 main outdoor stages setup for the event about 40 bars participate by
having bands on. The biggest main stage, in a grassed natural amphitheatre
was the venue for "The last summer of love 1999" featuring various tribute
bands performing 45 minute sets.
The Charlies were first on, before the crowds had built up. They stole 10
minutes sound check time and so a 55 minute set was possible. I reckon
about 400 people saw most of the show including about 40 who knew the Dead
- "Grateful Dead - best kept secret" as Brian said mid set. Considering
all the problems inherent in squeezing a show into a short set, the band
was great - cheers even for the China Cat > Rider. The somewhat discordant
jam, including "random" piano, at the end of UJB was brave given the
circumstances and led into an excellent Eyes.
