Cassady, Eyes of the World>Split Open jam.My girlfriend was coming to the evening shows and she is no fan of the Dead. But she did
dance to the Charlies, although how many people are fit enough to stay on right through an
over 45 min jam of St Stephen and I can't remember what else. They were really on form
and there was a full dance floor...
Ross McGibbon <mcgibbonross@usa.net>St Stephen went into The Other One and then Lovelight just stomped all over the place
and had everyone in the room yelling along. The lead guitarist just ripped notes out of the ether
while the band cooked along behind. (Did I detect a hint of Mountain Jam in there as well?)
To wrench Help on the Way>Slipknot! out of this maelstrom was a stroke of genius,
and brought a funkier edge to the band, which flowered beautifully in the closing Eyes of
the World, given a long, loving rendition...
Andrew Clarke <aclarke@sol.co.uk>...and from there into a Cassidy with a monstrous second break before time started to run out, and Brian threw in an
Eyes. As each minute of injury time ticked away, you could see him determined to cram in the next hypothetical
hour into five minutes as the outro flew all around the Phish/Stronger than Dirt type crossover.
I left once again awestruck at what our folks can produce...

Uncle John's Band>Jam>Estimated>Lost Sailor>Saint, Tangled, Cassidy>Girl from Ipanema>Eyes of the Split Open and Melted StashIt's always good to hear the Charlies with keyboards, and Harry Waters, squeezed into the corner for his Unplugged debut, added an extra dimension to some of the jams -- the band quoted "Money" in Estimated as an acknowledgement. Patrick coped heroically with the Cross-Eyed rhythm while doing vocal David Byrne impersonations at the same time: a prime candidate for a Big Suit. The band faced each other jazz-style for My Funny Valentine, and things got more copacetic for Cody's slow'n'snaky West LA, before a power cut (well, it is the Unplugged Club) terminated Set 1. Tangled, with its endless verses, can often seem too fast and repetitious, but has been nicely brought under control these days, especially by Mick's slide work, and builds to a rousing conclusion in best Jerry-band style. The emergence of Ipanema always gets a laugh for its cheese factor, (at least they kept it out of Cassidy), and the expected Eyes/Stash combo was topped by a loud, emphatic Split Open and Melt jam....(bp)

A high-intensity show, with the band really "on" and an enthusiastic audience of well over a hundred crammed into the Unplugged. Highlights of Set 1 were Phishy - notably the Cody-led Mikes Song jam - and the Bobby triple that followed later on was something special: haven't heard a Lost Sailor from the Charlies for years, and the driftin'and dreamin' solos led to the expected singalong at the end of Circumstance... but then a completely unexpected descent into a sinister Victim jam for which seemed made for tonight's loud and sometimes distorted acoustics ... Scarlet emerged fluently from the dissonance and became Fire, a relative rarity these days. And the band still manages to ring the changes on Stephen and The Other One in interesting and dynamic ways... A Down With Disease encore brought things to a suitably unpredictable conclusion. The only thing that spoilt it was having missed the WC1 breakout of Cosmic Charlie (the song) at the same venue the previous week... (bp)

About 170 present including loads of new (American) faces. Some songs not heard recently included Mississippi Half Step, Catfish John, All Over Now, New Minglewood Blues, Music Never Stopped, Don't Let Go, BIODTL...and some old regulars: Stranger, Estimated >Maze, Bird Song, Easy Wind, Help>Slipknot>Tangled, Sugaree, Dancin', Samson and Delilah, ending with St Stephen>Eleven>Eyes>Stash. In the set break the Mark Whitby Drum Devils did a 25 min percussion trio which was good and well received....Paddy Ladd:
They were sensationally good - Cody had emerged as the bass player they always needed -
in potentia anyway - and the material was chock-full of stuff i'd never seen before in 10 years of charlying
{has it reallllly been that long qq} - easy wind, music never stopped, and so on.In the 2nd set, I was caught up
in a long jam so amazing that myself and those around me felt this was one of *those* historical Charlie moments -
that turned out to be 'Dont Let Go'. And this was only part of the genius revealed that night - they went on to do
St Stephen>The Eleven and numerous Dead/Phish interweavings that blew the proverbial smoking
craters, illustrating for me that they have achieved something unique amongst all GD cover bands in finding the
crucial crossover point between these two bands, which seems to reside in the territory between The Other
One and aforesaid Phish material.

More Phishy interpolations tonight... Uncle Johns mutates into that band's own self-celebratory "Simple", with Brian singing the praises of Dan and Patrick (what is a band without a saxophone, or indeed a drummer?)-- really just a joke, but Shakedown Gin/Bathtub Street shows real promise and Eyes of the Stash is near-perfect now, with both Eyes jams really down, and witty, spiky little guitar grace notes topping each phrase of Stash (and the audience, of course, clapping on cue). Other highlights: a marchlike Tangled with Brian and Adam bouncing the chorus off each other, a singalong Tennessee Jed, and a dense Other One, within which My Favourite Things darted about as though it belonged there from the start. An added bonus was Sid's as a sort of micro-Scene, complete with some clever stick-juggling (duck everyone), a tapers section (!) and even a few outbreaks of near-twirling... not bad for a tiny cellar. bobcolover@easynet.co.uk:
I think the youngish crowd were more than happy, and surprised at how competent the band were. One of them, Adrienne [from the US of A] jumped up on stage, after what seemed like minimal encouragement, and guested on Peggy O. As Set 3 cruised on Brian started his guitar exploration, followed by Kenneally junior with a 'take no prisoners' drum solo. Frantic signalling resulted in The Management agreeing to the first encore... Terrapin. The Charlies pulled it off as the penultimate song of the night, and it was left to the crowd to mellow out with a tuneful How Sweet before spilling out onto Herne Hill's pavements. A great night out, long and liquid, with the Charlies hopefully making a great many converts among the expatriate community.

A little sloppy at times(just being honest), but overall very tight and great sound. Halfway through Eyes, and then into the Stash Jam into Playin into Other One, holy shit, I honestly thought I was hearing the real deal. I was blown away, honestly, the Eyes, Playin, Other One was some of the best music these ears have heard, at least in a good while anyway! Well, they finished the set, ending sometime after two, my girlfriend and I had a great time! hello to everyone we met. Anyone reading this thats seen the band knows what I am talking about when it comes to the intensity of the band, and if you haven't, SEE THEM!!

Candyman, Sugar/SSDD.The Unplugged Club is an ideal venue-- an atmospheric little cellar just off Tottenham Ct Rd, with a capacity of 100 or so. Just right for what I thought would be a nice little semi-acoustic set, but turned into a three hour fifteen minute monster...
Lineup was Brian (lead, vocals), Patrick (drums), Mick (bass), Adam (vocals, guitar). This was the first time I'd seen the "acoustic" lineup and was surprised what a full band sound it provided, from "Reckoning" style Dead through to some serious second set jamming. Some highlights: a 14-beat Beat It On for Patrick's 14th birthday; Easy Wind, the first (I think) apart from the rather chaotic Abbey Road singalong from 95; a really well-jammed Cassady, one of the best I've heard... Alabama still rocked in this format, UJB had a dense, almost martial-sounding jam and led to not one but two drum solos from Pat. Standing on the Moon was a surprise change of pace, and Adam's solo Althea had very delicate and sweet guitar work. Well past midnight and time for bed? Of course not, time for a long Eyes that included both 74 and 75 versions of the jam, and Foolish, working suprisingly well without the Brent part. Candyman was a last-minute surprise before Sugar/Sunshine wrapped things up.
Additional fun was provided by post-gig Night at the Opera antics: how many Charlies, plus all their instruments including the drum kit, can be squeezed into a very small car without them all getting arrested? Pouring rain an added attraction.
The cliche about the band and audience becoming one was especially true tonight, with Mick playing bass sitting down at one of the tables, and a brave but very out of it journalist from Hong Kong wandering up to the mike to singalong with Althea. Adam's mum, to my right in the er, taper's section, seemed to be having a good time. Brian coaxed a range of tones from his electro-acoustic, with an overall Spanish flavour to many of his solos... If anything, it was all a little too long (!).... Set two was a whole series of epics, all well played, but the show could have lost 45 mins or so and still have left everyone happy. (It also got a little chilly when the owner activated the air conditioning to free the air of incriminating vapours... go outside next time, folks!). If I wanted things to get even better than they are, I'd say let's have a bit more shape to the second set, and (given mixing limitations) more variation in the sound... but this was another in the band's current run of good shows, and it's hoped more of us will be able to make these very accessible Central London dates (next one is 11th Jan). This was my first sighting of the band. They don't come "up north" much so my
chances to see them are limited. Thanks to Steve Green I'd heard one of their
tapes but I reckoned it was unfair to judge based on an AUD tape. The venue for
this one was the upstairs room in a former Police Station, which has now been
well and truly firkinised. About 20 minutes before kick off the pub was full of
about 200 under 19s and about 40 over 40s. I doubt if anyone over 19 was left
downstairs when the band kicked off!. There were about 60 people watching and
listening. The band comprised of the 2 guitarists, Brian and Andy, bass, drums and
keyboard. They kicked off with Cat > Rider which, perhaps because of the
novelty worked well for me. After that the Bertha > Lovin; Cold rain and
Prudence seemed like predictable readings from the songbook. Brian was
suffering from a cold; this probably restricted him to the point of being
boring. They then went into Dancin' which started leaden so I went to the bar
for a beer. While at the bar, the music turned a corner; the band started to
play and I felt the smile coming on that stayed for the rest of the night. They
closed set 1 with a good rocking Deal. The second set went from strength to strength and my smile grew bigger; the
closing UJB was wonderful. Brian clearly lost his cold toward the end of set 1
and started to push things further. Their confidence seemed to grow as when
jams appeared they worked out fine, unlike at the start when they were so
predictable. I thought Andy on 2nd lead made some valuable contributions, but
why doesn't he take his turn to sing the odd song, his harmonies sounded fine.
Set 2 saw the substitution of the bass player. The new man was excellent with
his instrument, although proved to be more of a funky R&B man rather than an
exploratory Phil type. But given the upbeat tunes that they did he was
excellent. The other band members were, how shall I put this, er, adequate;
perhaps they just aren't given a chance to shine. I'd seen enough to know that
I want to see them again, provided they venture up to this end of the M1 / M6.
Fri OCT 4th:The Consiston, Idle, BRADFORD
China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Ride/Dear Prudence/Bertha/Good Lovin'/Shakedown Street/Uncle John's Band/Deal/Eyes Of The World/Morning Dew
Review by Andy Roberts
One More Friday Night......Friday night in Idle, a suburb of deepest Bradford is something to be seen. Idle
even has it's own Working Men's Club (think about it!). The Conistone pub is a
huge establishement which looks like a converted chapel, perched on top of hill.
What the Cosmic Charlies were doing there amid the nitelife of Bradford dog only
knows, but I sure am glad we saw them. Deadheads were few on the ground - I
reckon eight at most, and the rest of the audience were clearly bemused by the
whole experience. Some of them were clearly angry by what they saw and heard.
But despite this the Charlies played a storming set …It was all top quality stuff, Bertha almost entered Allman Brothers territory,
Shakedown was funk frug heaven and the jam in Uncle John's Band was long,
intense and jazzy, Uncle John would have been proud of them. Despite the nature
of the venue and audience the Charlies had the panache to close with a lyrical
Morning Dew. The two people we took with us were totally knocked out by them. I
fail to see why more Deadheads don't turn up to see the Charlies. You don't know
what you are missing. If you know they are on go and see them - and take some
friends! If I understood Brian right the bass player had never played with them
before (and he was *monstrously* good) and the keyboard player was usually a
drummer and the drummer usually a guitarist - or something like that! Thanks
chaps!

This was an all-acoustic version of the Charlies: there was no power on site and only Brian and Chris played with battery amps. Comfy chairs were supplied for band members for that downhome unplugged feel. The band played a one hour set round the fire to about fifty or so listeners in the Yurt (= Big Tent).

With about a hundred in attendance--unfortunately the opening heavy metal band scared a few tie-dies away early on--early highlights were a well-paced Bertha, a confident I Know You Rider, and a nicely melodic Jack Straw. The obvious standout was the continuous 48-minute-megasandwich of classics starting with Uncle John's: a bit fast maybe, but that didn't matter once Brian headed off into the first of a series of fluent jams, with a tasty St Stephen in the middle, my first in a long while. (Come on lads, now bring back The Eleven....). The Dead's disco-funk side emerged very differently tonight, with extra guitar from a US visitor on Stranger, and Shakedown displaying (maybe despite itself) a distinctive ska beat! The poignant wind-down of The Weight into WBYGN concluded a very special gig...

I loved all the peformances...the Good Lovin coming where it did was just
so in the groove and creamy.... the jams after Truckin were fascinating,
and to dump a Spanish jam on new boys like this..... whew....that was a
highlight for me. It was also great to hear Steves keyboards for a
change. Well done Brian ! Well done lads ! [paddy]

for a lengthy and well-attended show at the Last Waterhole, in the heart of Amsterdam's red light district (!) the night after Phish's Melkweg appearance.
The crowd included a number of heads from England, and also some Dutch heads who remembered the Charlies from their Amsterdam set in 94.
Thanks to Bill for turning up (with instrument) from Paris at very short notice. Also to the anonymous Scottish sax player who joined in from the audience... and the guy doing *very* strange interpretive dancing down the front... [bp]

Opening for Jefferson StarshipFeel Like A Stranger, Bertha, Scarlet Begonias, Sugaree, Terrapin, China Doll (58 m)
Cosmic Charlies opened with short but very sweet set of Dead favourites.
They were definitely "on" tonight. The usual lightshow, Liquid Love, also
accompanied the Starship set, projecting oil effects, slides and film
cartoons to classic "60s" effect. (bp)from Record Collector magazine:
COSMIC CHARLIES/JEFFERSON STARSHIP
A Grateful Dead tribute band? Surely not?
Yup. Thats what several hundred West Coast enthusiasts were greeted with
when they turned up to pay homage to one half of the Dead's acid rock
contemporaries Jefferson Airplane (now masquerading as Jefferson Starship).
And the boys from the Home Counties weren't half bad.
Wisely eschewing the tendency to step into character (ie Pigpen's leathers,
Weir's ponytail,Garcia's face-furniture) the Cosmic Charlies let the music
do the talking: they're a tribute band in the true sense of the word, not a
doppelganger outfit. That means you don't get note perfect renditions of songs like Scarlet Begonias, Sugaree or Terrapin Station,--but you do get a splendid
approximatuion of a Dead-like musical journey complete with spacy
improvisations that---eyes closed--are amazingly convincing.
