Hungry Ghosts have a raw sophistication to their sound that morphes naturally between minimalism and obscure intensity. Without the backbone of a vocalist , their music stands on it's own through their diversity of instruments, from the melodic ( guitar, drums glockenspiel), to the indefinable, (fire hydrants, dictaphone and anything capable of producing a sound). Their songs are intensely visual soundscapes, never wafty or dreary, always mature and resolved. Their feel could provide the backing to a 1920's German expressionist play or the soundtrack to a new David Lynch film. In essence Hungry Ghosts potential could fill international concert halls or pierce the heart of a fifteen year old crouched by the clock radio. The three founding members, John Brooks, Timothy Howden and Jazza Boneham, have been playing together for three years. After only three live shows in 1997 the Ghosts ventured into Birdland studios, and with the help of ex-Birthday Party member Rowland S. Howard, produced their debut self-titled LP. October 1997 saw Hungry Ghosts launch their first independent recording - a vinyl EP which quickly sold out of it's first pressing and since that time has now been re-issued on CD in both Australia, and the UK on Narwhal Recordings. Watching Hungry Ghosts perform is like moving through a thousand different emotions which begins the moment they illuminate the atmosphere on stage with candle light. With songs about falling asleep in the bathtub, finding snails in your underwear draw and aliens hijacking your car - you know not to expect the conventional. Instead, the Ghosts have a versatility where their music is a beautiful punk genre of it's own. June '99 saw Hungry Ghosts travel to New York to record with Steve Shelly of Sonic Youth, followed by dates in both the US and UK, where they supported fellow instrumentalists Billy Mahonie and Rothko. Hungry Ghosts debut 4 track EP is available now on Narwhal Recordings A domestic European release of the debut Hungry Ghosts album follows this summer.
