Sam from Edinburgh: "Wendy Haddock takes just the right approach in her Buteyko workshops. She is reassuring and amusing and makes sure that everyone is happy with what's going on. When I attended a workshop last year as a sceptical journalist and long-term asthmatic to research for a piece on Buteyko, I was prepared to be disappointed. More than 12 months later I've had no trouble with asthma at all. Wendy must be thanked for putting the method across so effectively. I bet she's also very good at getting children with asthma problems to practise the techniques in a way they enjoy. To anyone gasping for an alternative to drugs I'd recommend Wendy and Buteyko. They are definitely a breath of fresh air."
Ann 53, from Glasgow: "Before I was introduced to Wendy, I was on 3 inhalers which I found to be of no use. After the first session, I was still kind of dubious about the Buteyko Method. On the second session I was very surprised with some of the things Wendy was telling me about myself - she was obviously being very observant with me. I also found out more in the next couple of days about breathing and eating habits than I ever did from doctors and hospitals. For longer than I care to remember I never had a nights sleep. I still struggle trying to breathe through my nose and keeping my mouth taped at night, and I can tell the difference in the morning when I have pulled my tape off during the night - I definately don't feel so well. I strongly recommend the Buteyko Method to everyone I know, and its the best value for money that I have ever spent. I recommend the aftercare classes, because you do need encouragement to keep going. Wendy is a kind and sympathetic practitioner and listens, which is most important. I give many grateful thanks to Professor Buteyko."
Mae 69, from Glasgow: "I decided to attend a Buteyko course after months of finding no relief from a distressing and lengthy morning cough, in spite of using a reliever and preventative three times daily. I have had respiratory problems since infancy, and am now 69, so I wasn't surprised to be told that I could not expect a cure but would find some help from the Buteyko. I'm delighted to say the course has surpassed my expectations. I have no morning cough whatsoever and this has meant a great deal to me. No longer am I exhausted even before I've had breakfast. Many thanks to Buteyko and Wendy."
Thomas 69, from Glasgow: "Over the last 6 years suffering from emphysema, my breathlessness got so bad I was breathless on the slightest exertion. Walking up stairs to our door was a marathon test; chest infections and antibiotics every six weeks and three types of inhalers. I suffered for a few years from insomnia, and when I did try to sleep I immediately awakened with a dreadful feeling of being unable to breathe. I was depressed and anxious, and embarrassed with the continuous phlegm I was constantly coughing up. Since the Buteyko breathing course I feel so much better. Even after a few days I found that I could get to sleep better. I feel calm and in control. I can walk at a normal pace and even uphill at a slower pace. I do not cough up copious amounts of phlegm as much as I used to. I can now look forward to planning for the future"
Vicki 14, from Dumfries: "I'm now feeling much better and I don't have to use my inhalers. I used to have hay fever as well as asthma but now this seems to have gone as well. It's great! I used to have palpitations as well which were really worrying, but now they've gone. I'm really delighted in the change".
Jean from Edinburgh: "My asthma diminished to the point that I no longer needed to take my ventolin, although Wendy made it clear we should still carry our medication around with us. And if I became wheezy then I could feel fine simply by practising my exercises. As the weeks went by I found a hitherto unknown energy was dragging me out of bed in the morning. One of the bonuses for me was the elimination of the severe migraine headaches I have been suffering over the past few years - which I discovered were associated with poor carbon dioxide levels."
John 46, from Glasgow: "I have had asthma since childhood, and was getting frustrated at having to rely on medication. I have been pleased with the results. I am practically off medication and can run three miles on the treadmill. I work in a smoky atmosphere and use the shallow breathing techniques to help. I have also lost more than a stone in weight. I was warned progress is gradual and that has been the case."
Susan 26, from Glasgow: "I had severe asthma, and took a huge amount of drugs and had to use my nebuliser four times a day. The benefits have been amazing. I haven't used my nebuliser for four weeks, and the drugs are reducing. I have changed my diet, and have lost weight. I would never have believed it."
Betty 76, from Morecambe: "I had been on asthma medication since I was about 9 years old. By chance I saw a programme on Scottish T.V. featuring the Buteyko method and was feeling desperate enough to give it a try. Year by year I was on increasing medication and yet I seemed to be getting steadily worse. The walk up from the bus in the village, though not far, was becoming a struggle I couldn't always manage if it was cold or windy. I felt I was becoming a prisoner in my own home. I can honestly say it was the best money I ever spent. Since doing the course I have only used my ventolin on rare occasions and am now completely drug free! I lost a stone and a half in weight and feel better than I have for many years."
Joyce from Ayr: "I haven't used my inhaler since the very first night after I went to see Wendy. When I was pregnant I suffered a very bad asthma attack and had to go into hospital. My asthma was so bad after that I could not walk to work, go dancing or even have a laugh without reaching for my inhaler. I was using more and more drugs and yet still nothing seemed to be controlling what was happening to me. Now I'm enjoying having a freedom back in my life that had disappeared. People at work see a big difference in me. I can have a laugh in the staff room and a night out with the girls!"
