He fought in the Dutch army until being badly wounded at Breda in 1637.
Despite his injuries, he commanded a regiment in the 1st Bishops' War , and a brigade in the 2nd.
He supported the royalists from the outset of war, but did not play a major role in the fighting until the battle of Marston Moor, in which he fought well as a cavalry officer.
Goring again fought well at the 2nd battle of Newbury , driving Oliver Cromwell's cavalry back.
Later he was appointed general of horse. The royalists continued to suffer defeats, and after the battle of Langport, Goring left for France.
After the wars, he fought in the Spanish army for many years.
