Never underestimate the
power of the force
Star Wars - Phantom Menace
- Lucas Arts
Playstation £44.99

The long awaited PSX version of  the PC adventure game will be a fairly precise replica with perhaps some more size and scope thanks to the larger and faster arcade engine of the Playstation. In what will be a 3D-style action/adventure in the style of Tomb Raider or the first person levels of the Nintendo 64's Star Wars - Shadows of the Empire, you assume the part of many of the movie's characters, each character arising depending on the situation. However, you'll be playing as a Jedi more than any other type of character during the game's 12 levels, mainly because the Jedi plays such a huge role in the film.

mmmmmm, FMV

Some of the action will take place on Tatooine, where two Jedis, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, start their search for young Anakin Skywalker. Players will take on several roles, four different lead characters, in fact. And though most of the time will be spent playing Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon, later in the game, new roles will include Captain Panaka, leader of the Queen's guard, and Queen Amidala, mother of the wayward Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader if you hadn't already worked that one out).

Pesky sandmen

In the film, the two central Jedis find Anakin quite quickly. But in the game, it's a different story. Searching for him is a large proportion of the game, enabling players to spend more time in locations such as Watto's junk shop on Tatooine,  the courtyards of Theed Palace on Naboo, the streets of the Mos Espa marketplace on Tatooine, and the teeming capital city of Coruscant.

LucasArts, the company behind the man/legend George Lucas, has confidently announced that it will take players between 20-40 hours to get through the game from beginning to end, and added that lots of gameplay will venture into new situations not found in the movie.

In Tomb Raider-esque style Mini-quests based on tiny plot devices of the film and puzzles will need to be solved throughout the game, making up the game's centre around which the overall structure will revolve. But, in a new and innovative approach untried since Abe's Oddyssey, The Phantom Menace also challenges players to interact with inhabitants, talking and negotiating to search for clues and gain much needed items of equipment.

There will, of course, be combat elements against battle droids and alien enemies in which you will get ample opportunity to weild your light saber or other blaster. While, most of the time you'll use a light saber, the Jedi's trademark weapon, a surprising amount of additional weapons will be picked up along the way allowing for bigger and better firepower when you meet with level bosses or unfriendly automatons.

Star Wars Phantom Menace is due for release on the Playstation May 19th 1999. We recommend you pre-order your copy now before the rush.
