The Liberia Program

The Liberia Program started in June 1998 after almost a year of research and surveys in the country. Since then, EFA has been involved mainly with implementation of the following project:
Campaign for environmental awareness, education and positive action in Liberia
A nation wide environmental awareness campaign focusing especially on schools and communities in Monrovia and environs and an agroforestry initiative in Ganta, Nimba County. The project is funded by NC-IUCN/Tropical Rainforest Program.

Since October 1998, EFA has been working closely with UNHCR, ECRRP and other local partners to develop:
Environmental education, community agroforestry and energy saving scheme
The pilot scheme, sponsored mainly by UNHCR under the Liberian Children's Initiative, is targeting returning refugees from Guinea, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone in 6 communities in Nimba County.

Recently, EFA has been negotiating with UNHCR to support:
Refugee Environmental Action Programme
An environmental awareness and action program targeting refugees from Sierra Leone in refugee camps in and around Monrovia, Liberia.
The Liberian Program has established a platform for collaborative efforts with a number of local NGOs particularly the Society for Conservation of Nature in Liberia (SCNL), Pollution Control Association of Liberia (POCAL) and Centre for Environmental Education and Protection (CEEP).

Worklinks have been established with the Forest Development Authority (FDA), Ministries of Agriculture; Education; Rural Development; Lands, Mines and Energy; and Health.

EFA Liberia Program is registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is accredited by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs.

EFA is serving as an "umbrella" organisation for its country programs.
The Sierra Leonean Program started off as a separate program under the name ENFOSAL – Environmental Foundation of Sierra Leone.
