The Environmental Foundation for Africa is working to repair the widespread damage to the environment in Africa by:encouraging, through education and training, public awareness of environmental issues and the need for community participation in repairing damage to, and conservation of that environment; EFA has so far succeeded with the pilot projects in Liberia awareness raising and agroforestry programs in communities and schools in Monrovia and its environs and in Nimba county. A proven concept, with both theoretical and practical aspects, is now developed and it is time to replicate it further in other parts of Liberia, and to encourage communities themselves to pick up the scheme. Over hundred volunteers have been trained and have the skills to transfer their knowledge and the practical aspects of tree nursery projects and energy saving schemes. In Sierra Leone, ENFOSAL already had a strong representation prior to the 1997 coup. The subsequent escalation of the civil conflict led to disruption and suspension of program activities. With ongoing peace talks and the promise of lasting peace, EFA now plans to revive the Sierra Leone program, which has been maintained through the last years with very meagre resources and a small group of very committed and enthusiastic volunteers.
