Environmental education, community agroforestry
and energy saving scheme

This is a pilot scheme initiated and sponsored by UNHCR. Its primary beneficiaries are returnees from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Guinea, internally displaced persons and former combatants.

The program focuses on raising awareness of environmental issues at village community level in Nimba County and it is targeted at schools and rural communities, particularly those with a high proportion of Liberian returnees, internally displaced persons and former combatants.

Apart from raising awareness about environmental problems, the program seeks to motivate and empower communities to develop an income-generating base through developing micro-agricultural and agroforestry schemes that help to conserve the natural environment through the setting up of tree nurseries, establishment of woodlots for fuelwood and charcoal harvesting, and promoting the production and use of clay-based energy efficient stoves.

The pilot is nearing completion and the results show that the project has been largely succesful. Consideration is now being given to replicate the initiative in other communities in Liberia and possibly in Sierra Leone, when refugees start returning home.
