The Environmental Foundation for Africa is serving as umbrella agency for country programs in Liberia and Sierra Leone. EFA's task is to set-up the country programs and support development and management of various project activities.
EFA has identified as its primary objective, collaboration with the appropriate government agencies, local environmental groups, international development and relief organizations, business enterprises and local communities, to encourage the development of National Environmental Action Plans. Such plan, it is envisaged, will provide a holistic approach to addressing environmental concerns. The Liberia Program is run by a core team of 2 expatriates (who also cover the Sierra Leonean Program) and 4 national staff, with the help of over 100 volunteers. The volunteers have received introductory training to conduct environmental awareness exercises in schools and communities. The program focuses on raising awareness of environmental issues at village community level and in schools, setting up tree nurseries and promoting energy saving initiatives through the projects:
In Sierra Leone, ENFOSAL has been working during the last two years with very small means to maintain some of the programs disrupted by the coup of 25 May 1997. From June 1999, the Sierra Leone program will be revived with funding from NC-IUCN/TRP.
Work will start to re-establish ENFOSAL's office, work force and programs. The practical aspects of the project will start immediately with the participation of PAGE (Peninsula Action Group for Environment) an action group set-up with help from ENFOSAL in March 1997.
