CHAPTER 22 - WHAT CARTOON? |
Strangely, the one thing
that I don't remember, is doing a cartoon that some of the people who
were there with me have apparently never forgotten! Thirty - six years after
the event when, almost by accident I met up with Tom Feeley (currently
secretary of the RAF Regiment Comrades Association) who had been a corporal on
the same guard duty, he asked me if I remember doing the drawing. He seemed
quite disappointed to learn that I had forgotten all about it, for he had kept
the original all those years and it was only when he sent me a photocopy that
the rusty cogs of my memory reluctantly started to
move.
It was all there. I had tried to
capture one or two of the characters; a certain sergeant who was always on
a winning streak at cards but never had any cigarettes of his own; a tubby
corporal who started chopping up the shelves when there were no trees left; the
forlorn, pointed stumps of the cut-down trees in the garden, like upturned
stakes (with an IOU to Kokkini Trimithia for damages); the innumerable mugs of
tea, and the flatulent effect of too many beans, which came close to rivalling
the noise and velocity of those roaring, jet-propelled
stoves
