1973-- 37SQN L A C Matthews B FLT My D-C SGT Vic Craggs

On exercise Castle Hills Catterick Camp ( RAF ) Assault Course Site. I had not yet done gun course so was given task of camouflaging the admin site, gun cables, etc. This I did with vigor and enthusiasm as wanting to please the SGT also the crew. Bury the cables, chop the tree branches for the tent. Nothing was going to stop me .

The crew was on the gun , I could see they was busy, going round doing things I did not understand at that time. Next I heard the SGT shout AIR RAID RED----TAKE POST. This I knew meant me as the CPL had told me that I was to pass ammunition up to the gun.

So with great excitement I threw the axe in my hand down to take my place with a real gun crew. Sparks flew all around, the gun stopped, the crew looked at me , the SGT was Shouting----- CHANGE TO HAND-----MATTHEWS YOU *******************

I looked down to see I had chopped straight threw the gun 55way cable!!!!!!!

P .S. did pass gun course later. SPIKE
