German ambassador to the United Kingdom Dr. Von
Ploetz avoided any
mention of the War in June. Members of the
European-Atlantic Group asked some tough
questions about European integration. He avoided
answering them. Britain, it seemed
according to his speech, is the only country
where eurosceptics reside. Von Ploetz also
accused the British press of not stimulating any
real debate on the future of the EU. Yet with
Germany haunted by its past he declared Germany's
Euro-debate to be over. So Dr. Von Ploetz refuted
the need for a German referendum on further
European economic and political union. To him
"ever closer union" means
"devolution."
