Kinnock: The Euro In
Relation to the European Movement |

Neil Kinnock,
Vice-President of the European Commission, denies
that the EU has
any plans for tax harmonisation at a recent
meeting of the European-Atlantic Group (E-AG).
|
Former
Labour leader Neil Kinnock and Vice-President of
the European Commission denied on 18th February
2002 that the European Union has any plans for
harmonising taxation. Yet Belgium's finance
minister Didier Reynders has called for the
introduction of a common system of income and
property taxation. According to Democracy Movement
campaign director, Marc Glendening, German
finance minister Hans Eichel has argued that the
success of the euro depends on creating a level
playing field of taxes, and therefore a common
EU-wide system of taxation
is absolutely necessary.

EuroPolls: EMU a loss of
sovereignty?

British Prime Minister Tony Blair soon hailed the
introduction of euro notes and coins within the
12 EU member state eurozone as a success. In fact
the euro was even fêted by some within the
British media, while others such as The Sun and
the Daily Mail were more scathing. French bank
workers also took another view and went on strike
over pay and conditions. In spite of Blair's enthusiasm,
doubts were revealed over any future British
membership of the single currency. It was also
disclosed - even by EU Commission President
Romano Prodi on BBC News 24 - and contrary to the
pro-euro lobby's denials, that Economic and Monetary Union
is a political project and not an economic one.

Afghanistan
: Taliban on The Run |
|
|
The search goes on for Mullah Omar and Al Qaeda
leader Osama bin Laden, while an interim Afghan
government now tries to restore stability to the
country.Mullah
Omar, the Taliban's leader, was last reported to
have escaped on a motorbike. Yet there is only
speculation about the where Osama bin Laden is
now hiding. Is he really in Pakistan?
With India and
Pakistan on a near war-footing, and with Israeli
action against the Palistinian Authority, the US
"War on Terrorism" appears to have set
a very dangerous precedent; one that can only lead to
further regional conflicts.

Peter
Hain's Euro Opportunism |

Minister for Europe:
Peter Hain MP speaking
to members of the European-Atlantic Group (E-AG)
on 12th December 2001
|
Peter Hain, the Minister for Europe, spoke to
members of the European-Altantic Group just
before Christmas about his enthusiasm and hopes
for the euro, his belief that the EU now needs a
pan-EU arrest warrant following the events of
September 11th, the EU response to terrorism in
more general terms, and the British and Spanish
government's negotiations over the sovereignty of
Gibraltar.
The
latter led him, upon leaving the debate, to mock
the perhaps more sarcastic comments of EAG member
Michael Shrimpton. Mr. Shrimpton had apparently
suggested that the Spanish are preparing to
invade Gibraltar.

EMU Comment Forum: Email
News |

|
All seems quiet, at
least in so far as the Democaracy Movement is
concerned. The DM, as it is known to its
supporters, sent an email to them in December
2001 which contested the views of Peter Hain MP -
Minister for Europe - and informed the recipients
that its website's front page was being changed. As usual the European
Movement and Britain in Europe have been more
active with the use of emails to promote their
enthusiasm for the euro cause. One email even
suggests that Britain's most eurosceptical daily
newspaper, The Sun, has now been converted into
an ardent supporter of the single currency. Are they setting their
hopes too high ?
