back to Brunelleschi

Florentine sculptor and architect, 1377 - 1446

"The leading men of the district [of Santo Spirito in Florence] obtained an order for the church of Santo Spirito to be rebuilt. Filippo was sent for and asked to make a model incorporating all the useful and appropriate features he could devise worthy of a Christian church."

Reconstruction of Brunelleschi's model for Santo Spirito
"The church was 322 feet long and 108 feet in width, and it was so well planned, in the ordering of the columns and the other decorations, that it would be impossible to construct a more ornate, more charming, or more graceful edifice." I-171

Santo Spirito (interior columns)
"...the model has not been followed in every detail. One can see this from some of the external features which do not accord with the order followed in the interior, as should have been the case, for example with the doors and the frames of the windows." I-171
