And, just when it appeared things could only get better, they got considerably worse.
A couple of perhaps illusory wins in the league cup notwithstanding,
Horsforth began this season so badly in the league that by November
the side had not a single point to its name, and had gone an entire calendar year since the last league victory.
With the club more or less on the brink of anarchy,
Neil Oddy resigned as manger, and was replaced by Mark Bickerdike.
As is traditional at HFFC, Neil, a colourful and committed character who had perhaps
been the right Manager at the wrong time, was to continue to serve the club,
as Treasurer and occasional goalkeeper, for several more years.
Under Mark Bick's regime, the side picked up a few points here and there, Brookfield and the Irish Centre
being soundly beaten at Roundhay, but we never looked like doing enough
to avoid relegation for the first (and, so far, only) time in the club's history.
Bernie Gilmore was present and correct again in goals, Steve Burns, Ray Child,
Mark Burrows and Tim Vickerman the regulars in defence.
John Steenson switched between defence and midfield, where he was joined by Craig Oddy,
new team jester Chris Fardon, Tim Hirst, Simon Hockney, Andy Peat and of course Mark Bick.
In the forward line, Dave Vernon and Mark Sweeney were aided and abetted by
Ian Jagger and Billy Potter from time to time. Craig began the season as captain,
but eventually the job passed to Mark Bick, and then back to Mark Sweeney.
It really was that sort of year!
Back: Mark Bickerdike, Bernie Gilmore, Chris Fardon, Ray Child, Mark Burrows, Mark Sweeney, Simon Hockney.
Front: Dave Vernon, Tim Vickerman, Tim Hirst, Craig Oddy, Steve Burns, Neil Oddy.
The 1984-85 season might be remembered with affection in some quarters,
however, as it was the year that the club moved to playing in green,
the original all-green "pinstripe" kit and the silver
change strip both being introduced at this time.
Highlight - the three-game Jack Shaw Trophy run,
a bafflingly easy romp against Negas, the hard-won Canada Dry game at Bramley
and a narrow defeat in the third round.
The last 16 of the league cup - it didn't take much to get us excited in those days.
