Front: Chris Fardon, Simon Hockney, Dave Vernon, Mark Bickerdike, Andy Davison, Tim Hirst.
A puzzling season in many ways, with many unexpected results both good and adverse,
and overall perhaps a year of marking time for the club.
The 5-0 home triumph against Thurstons, for example, was immediately offset
by losing 6-0 at home to the Old Ball in the Jubilee Cup.
Nor should anyone forget the way we came from behind to end Stables Rangers' unbeaten record
in one of several "home" games we were forced to play on alternative pitches at Roundhay
after our own home ground was badly damaged as a result of the Council's infuriating decision
to use it as a car park on bonfire night.
But we would all try hard to forget the club's first "televised" game,
a wretched home defeat at the hands of Jonas Woodhead.
Gary Watson's camera work captured for posterity the passing Tetleys dray-horses,
the welcome arrival of Gaynor at the ground,
Mark Bick's unflattering comments about the referee at half time,
and lots of shots of Ray's posterior,
but mercifully little of the football.
Dave Postle had arrived to replace the emigrated goalkeeper Simon Vickers,
but otherwise it was very much as you were team-wise.
The defence was generally based around Tim Vickerman, Mark Sweeney, John Hryszko and Ray Child;
John Steenson, Mark Bickerdike and Phil Troughton were the regular choices
in a three-man midfield, augmented perdiodically by Craig Oddy.
Andy Davison, Simon Hockney (back after a year playing in Bradford),
Dave Vernon and Tim Hirst vied for the places in attack.
And the efforts of squad members Chris Fardon, Steve Burns and Simon Jenkins
should not pass unnoticed.
It was this season that the plainer all-green kit supplanted the pinstripes
of the previous three years.
Highlights - the two very different wins against our old adversaries Blenheim Albion,
a 7-0 romp on their ground
(Bedquilts 6, which would later play a key role in the club's fortunes),
and a dour and spiteful 2-0 on ours.
