The calm before the storm?
Fate had another cruel blow in store for the club in the summer of 1990,
the injury to Mark Sweeney in pre-season training abruptly ending his career
after a record 122 consecutive games in the starting line-up.
Horsforth had some fortune, however, in acquiring the services of two players
who were to prove of great importance over the next few years,
namely midfielder Lee Monaghan and central defender Kelvin Tapley.
The strip was changed to green and black stripes at this juncture,
democratically elected as our chosen colours, with orange and blue as the change kit.
With the emotions of the last few months being channeled
into a reaffirmation of the club's self-belief, this season started very promisingly,
the astonishing 6-0 win against Merlins at Middleton on the opening day being the prime example,
but things soon went off the rails, due largely to an astonishing spate of injuries -
more or less every member of the squad was be significantly incapacitated
at some stage of the proceedings.
Back: Andy Davison, Simon Vickers, John Steenson, Dave Vernon, Dave Postle, Kelvin Tapley, Craig Oddy.
Front: Phil Troughton, Simon Hockney, Tim Vickerman, Martin Woods, Tim Hirst, Lee Monaghan.
Dave Postle (broken jaw against West Hunslet) and Simon Vickers (back injury) were among the first casualties, and,
when Manager Tim Hirst called up the long-departed Bernie Gilmore to plug the gap,
he only got half an hour's worth out of him before Bernie too joined the sick list.
Gary Watson ended up doing the honours between the sticks for most of the season,
a long way from the worst player ever to grace the No 1 jersey.
Tim Vickerman, John Hryszko, Kelvin, John Steenson and Steve Burns
were in the frame for the defence, with Martin Woods, Lee Mon, Phil Troughton,
Tim Hirst and Marten Gadd in midfield.
Up front, Bob Matthew took up the mantle at centre-forward,
leading the line with increasing effectiveness, with able support from Simon Hockney,
Dave Vernon, Andy Davison and the ubiquitous Hirsty.
It was also a season for a certain amount of nostalgia as,
due to the contining injury crisis,
several HFFC stars of yesteryear were persuaded to turn out for the club again.
Although having to dig deep into the pool of available talent,
the side finished in a respectable position in the top half of the table.
The best game of this season was probably the first, a 6-0 win against Merlins at Middleton.
