HFFC and friends, Ireland 1995.
Back: Gary Stevens (Isn't milk brilliant?), Karen Woods, Andy Constable, Jim Brown, Paul Coggins, Sean Taylor, Lee Monaghan, Minny, Richard Bridgemount, Rob Willets, Joanne Kelly.
Front: Steve Burns, Neil Grayson, Martin Woods, Phil Ridsdale, Brendan Walkden, Angie Hough.
The long-expected elevation of Martin Woods to the Manager's post
changed the entire outlook of the club almost overnight.
The home pitch was changed, after fourteen years,
from Roundhay Park to pitch 6 at Bedquilts Recreation ground
(off St Helens Lane in Adel), there were trips to Ireland in the summer,
and many key signings. Phil Ridsdale ("Riggsy") took over from Woody in central midfield,
and as club captain, Woody having worn the armband now for six seasons.
Riggsy's brother Dave played at right-back, Brian Cowling usually at left-back.
Utility defender Paul Coggins reinforced an already strong back line.
Although Minny started the season up front, he soon left the Leeds area,
and Mark Hepworth ("Heppy") and Andy Jackson ("Jacko") joined the club
as autumn changed to winter. Steve Mayhew gave us another alternative in this area.
Dave Postle was the regular again in goals, John Steenson, Kelvin Tapley and Sean Taylor
mainstays in defence, with support from Andy Constable. In the centre of the midfield,
Lee Monaghan and Riggsy were the main men, Neil Grayson, Lee Woods and Jacko
the usual flank players, with Craig Carter disappearing
due to work commitments as the season progressed,
and Brendan Walkden often switched from up front to wide midfield.
Back: Phil Ridsdale, Lee Woods, Dave Postle, Sean Taylor, John Steenson, Minny, Kelvin Tapley.
Front: Lee Monaghan, Brendan Walkden, Neil Grayson, Craig Carter, Martin Woods, Brian Cowling, Dave Hall.
The race for the championship of Division Three between ourselves and Iveson went,
to coin a phrase, right to the wire.
The two titanic, drawn encounters between the clubs will live long in the memory.
Horsforth were beaten only three times all season - twice, crucially, by Tetleys Brewery -
but there were also one or two draws which might perhaps have been turned into victories.
Iveson's form, especially in the latter stages of the campaign,
was such that our greatest points tally ever was not going to be enough
to secure the title which at one stage had seemed almost a certainty.
This had been, by any standards, an absolutely great season,
and the fact that it didn't end with the trophy our efforts merited
should in no way detract from the achievement.
As a highlight, the tremendous game away to Troydale, which ended 1-0 to us,
takes some beating.
