Back: Martin Woods, Paul Rhodes, Mark Duce, Simon Lee, AJ Jackson, Phil Ridsdale, Steve Sedgwick, Pete Guzdek.
Front: Lee Monaghan, Richard Lord, John Steenson, Dave Ridsdale, Nobby Rhodes, John Newsome, Steve Mason.
The first season in Wharfedale started slowly, as Horsforth adjusted gradually to the new environment,
and to the absence of long-serving players Sean Taylor and Craig Carter,
together with the less frequent availability of Kelvin Tapley.
Simon Lee started in goal, with Richard Harper back to challenge for the yellow jersey.
In the spring, James Hunt arrived at the club, and soon made the place his own.
After early uncertainty, the back four settled down very nicely with
Nobby Rhodes, Phil Ridsdale, John Steenson and Steve Sedgwick
providing the most stable defence we had had in ages,
Dave Ridsdale and Kelvin covering on occasion.
Lee Monaghan and Mark Duce monopolised the central midfield roles,
with Andy Bowler, Lee Woods, Dave Ridsdale, Pete Guzdek and Paul Rhodes contesting the other places.
John Newsome was almost ever-present in attack, and top scorer, with Andy Jackson the most usual partner.
Simon Parker also played in the forward line, or in midfield,
while Sandy Lay also figured in these areas as the season approached its crucial phase.
Although placed in the lower of the Wharfedale Triangle's two divisions, Division One,
Horsforth by no means had it their own way in the race for the title.
Crown Celtic, runners-up, were the only team to beat us,
though both games with Thackley Commercial were drawn.
A home win against Crown on the final day saw Horsforth confirmed as champions:
it had been a long struggle, but there were several very decent sides in
this supposedly second-class division.
HFFC Wharfedale Triangle Division 1 winning team 23rd April 2000.
Back: Jo (Sandy's wife), Kev Collier, Martin Woods, Simon Parker, Kelvin Tapley, James Hunt, John Steenson, AJ Jackson, Mark Duce, Simon Lee, Steve Sedgwick, Paul Rhodes, Lee Orange, Christine (Sedge's Mum) with Tristan and infant, Karen Woods, Carolyn Brown (partially obscured, shortly to be Mrs Jackson), Joy (Mrs Newsome).
Front: Youngest member of Sandy's family, Nobby Rhodes, John Newsome, Dave Ridsdale, Andy Bowler, Phil Ridsdale, Lee Monaghan, Sandy Lay.
The League Cup competition was where we made our real mark, however.
After a bit of a scare in the opening game at Esholt
(the second of three meetings between the clubs on three succesive Sundays)
and a breeze of a Quarter-Final against FC Fox
(we scored 29 goals without reply against them in our three meetings),
we were up against the Premier Division's elite clubs.
A Semi-Final win against holders Rawdon was followed by a 2-0 success against Park Rangers,
the unbeaten Premier Division winners, in the Final at Guiseley FC,
Simon Parker and Andy Jackson the scorers,
and the run of success didn't end there.
League Cup winning team 30th April 2000.
Back: Martin Woods, Paul Rhodes, John Steenson, AJ Jackson, Kelvin Tapley, James Hunt, Simon Lee, Mark Duce, Kev Collier (partially obscured), Steve Sedgwick, Jamie.
Front: Lee Monaghan (junior and senior), Steve Burns, Arran, Lee Orange, John Newsome (plus offspring), Sandy Lay (plus offspring), Dave Ridsdale, Phil Ridsdale, Simon Parker, Nobby Rhodes.
In an "Inter-League Combination" game at Esholt,
Wharfedale Sunday League Division 1 winners Stoney Lane were overcome 3-1,
giving our club three trophies in as many weeks.
We also won the Wharfedale Triangle's Fair Play Shield,
and even a 5-a-side competition in Hall Park during the summer.
This had been, by some way, the club's most successful season ever.
