I spent the night in a sleeping bag outside the locked "monastery" where the nuns wove this piece - it wasn't until the morning that I discovered why men were only admitted during the day! The greek word Monastiri is not gender-specific. The nuns wouldn't accept payment for the rug, but I left a gift in their chapel.
