In Command

SASL has the unique feature that requires both the Friendly and Enemy forces to pass a task check (a CMD or Action DR respectively).

Failure of this DR results in Panic for the unit concerned.

This means a unit may suddenly not be available to carry out the action required for the remainder of that player turn. For the Friendly side a leader within a 2 hex range has the ability to assist with this DR and use his -DRM.

On the basis of this rule and also the fact that in real terms HQ units are a key part of any fighting force I developed the following additional House Rules.

  1. Coy Order of Battles are amended to incorporate HQ units,
  2. i.e. Fallschirmjaeger Coy 1940

  3. HQ Effects
  4.

    A

The unit representing the Coy staff must stay in same hex or Adjacent to the Coy Cmdr in order for Coy Cmdr -DRM to be used. (For any purpose). This represents the loss of Command efficiency if Coy HQ Staff not able to assist Coy Cmdr control his Battle and be aware of his intentions.

    B

However the Coy Staff is able to assist with CMD DR exactly as if was leader, a -1 DRM applies providing unit is Good Order and has not suffered causality reduction. This unit cannot deploy. The Coy Staff have ability to motivate as if a leader but only if they remain as a complete unit.

    C

If Coy Cmdr is eliminated a +2 DRM applies to all CMD DRs made by all units for remainder of Mission. The -1 DRM for Coy Staff remains. However if an alternate leader (i.e. a platoon Cmdr) joins and remains with staff as per 2A the +2 DRM is NA.Until Deputy Coy Cmdr can take over the Coy suffers as a result of loss of leader and is likely to struggle to take proactive action.

    D

If Coy Staff is eliminated the Coy Cmdr loses his -DRM for remainder of Mission. As above Coy Cmdr loses command ability without his staff.

    E

Neither the Coy Cmdr or Coy Staff are required to pass a CMD DR.This is due to their training and role to remain in control no matter the situation.

    F

The Coy Cmdr must have at least a -1DRM but does not have to have either the highest -DRM or Morale within Coy.This reflects the notion that the Coy Cmdr does not have to be the most resilient Soldier or best motivator but does have the ability to control and plan.

The thinking behind these rules is based on the Historical role of the Coy HQ and my experience when working within a Command Post environment. It requires that the Coy Cmdr and Staff are an asset to be protected with grave consequence if eliminated, which of course is common sense. Put the CP in the front line and you gain the benefits but at a higher risk of loss. The role of the Coy CP was quite simply to run the battle and to ensure the mission task was successfully completed.
