JOB STRESS |
First a brief note on Stress. Stress is actually a normal healthy physiological and psychological response to demands placed on us. It was designed to initiate something called the fight/flight response (some people add an extra "f" here but for public decency we decided against it). This is your body's way of providing you with extra energy and capacity to act. All very good if you're about to get eaten by a hungry Lion but not too great if you are at work (unless you're a mudwrestler of course!). Apologies to all the stressed mudwrestlers - Ed
If this mechanism is activated frequently, or in other words, if the pressure in your job is pretty intense or longterm (and remember boredom can be one of the workplaces' biggest stresses ) then your body starts to get rundown. However, like many things in Psychology this is a little too easy to be precisely true. In actual fact, the main factor in feeling stressed at work is if you think you are stressed or can't cope. It's a bit of a 'chicken and the egg' situation.
