Behaviour Therapy |
You might of heared of Pavlov's dogs. This was an early example of behavioural work, whereby a Russian scientist (you guessed it - Pavlov!) showed that he could get some dogs to drool whenever he rang a bell. Basically he did this by teaching them that the bell meant food was about to arrive.
Modern day behavioural techniques continue to work on the premise of changing what people do by teaching them to respond to things in a different way.
Behaviour therapy aims solely at changing what people do, it's not really interested in what's going on in your head. It's been shown over time to be pretty effective.
In the past, criticism has been aimed at this form of therapy. This is because it can be pretty unpleasant. However, most modern techniques concentrate on using rewards rather than punishment. It is also commonly used when people have communications problems, for example people with mental handicap.
We are thinking of creating a SimplePsych factsheet on Behaviour Therapy which goes into more detail while still using easy to understand English. If you would be interested at this service being offered to you please let us know by emailing us Click Here
