WHAT TYPE OF HELP DO I NEED? |
As between psychotherapy and medication, there is a lot of debate over which particular therapies work best. A lot of research has been conducted in this area,
and it seems that the type of therapy is not as important as how similar the backgrounds of the therapist and the client are. Reading between the lines it seems that how well you 'click'
with your therapist seems to be the best predictor of success.
There are other more practical factors that are important, such as how long the therapy goes on for. This can vary between one visit, and therapy lasting for years.
Also, where you live plays a role. In most places, trained therapists are a scarce resource, and this limits your choice somewhat. The UK National Health Service also is reluctant to offer long term therapy because of the cost involved, so if you want certain forms of longer term therapy you will have to pay. This may not seem like a major consideration when you are desperate to get your problems sorted, but be aware that long term private therapy can be costly, both in terms of time and money. You will have to take this into account if you decide to pursue this way forward.
So once you embark on some form of therapy give it a chance.
It may well seem strange and you may well end up hating how uncomfortable you
feel once the therapy starts, this is normal. Even if it doesn't work out for you,
it doesn't mean that all therapies won't work. Of course for some, no therapy will help,
but the majority of people, when asked, generally say that they have got something positive
out of having therapy, even if it isn't a total cure for their problem(s).
