A Message of Hope

Dear SimplePsych,

I thought some of your visitors might like to know that having Schizophrenia doesn't mean it's the end of your life. My brother, who is now 29, has had Schizophrenia since he was 18. He has had periods in hospital during this time, but he has also got on with his life. Next month he is getting married, and he has recently found a job. No small feat I think you'll agree.

Hats Off to Relate

Dear SimplePsych,

Like the webpage, it's about time there was stuff on the web that wasn't American, or written in mumbo jumbo. Recently, myself and my wife visited Relate (Relationship Counselling Service). It was my first experience of any sort of counselling, and if I am honest I was absolutely dreading it. But having reached a point of desparation we went, and it wasn't anything like I thought it would be. The counsellor we saw was really helpful without being sickly sweet or judgemental, and although it was tough at times, my wife and I managed to talk to each other in a way that we haven't done for 20 years. It's helped us a lot and meant that we probably had the first enjoyable Christmas that we've had for the last few years. I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Nurses get No Thanks

Dear SimplePsych,

Firstly let me say great site, I think there are probably a lot of mental health professionals who will find your site pretty useful, even though I would suspect not many of them would admit it in public.

However, my main point is this. I work as a nurse in an acute adult psychiatric unit, and I've been working over Christmaas. I cannot believe how much we are taken for granted. While most people working over Christmas, will expect to earn at least double their avarage amount of pay, I got paid a normal rate for a Sunday. Given that we don't get paid a lot anyway, I think this is miserly. I'd be interested to here what other people think.

P.P.
