Elective Mutism |
It's when a child doesn't speak in certain situations. It's not that the child is unable to speak but decides not to speak, usually because of how he or she feels.
About 1 in 1000 children have Elective Mutism. It is as
common in girls as in boys.
It usually starts when the child is very young.
Yes it can.
Many different forms of treatment have been used. Some of the more popular ones are:
1 in 2 children improve pretty quickly. Others will take more time. If the child has failed to improve by the age of 10 then it doesn't bode too well for the future mental health of the child.
