Schizoaffective Disorders

What Are Schizoaffective Disorders?

Schizoaffective disorders are basically a combination of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, and mood disorders such as mania or depression. The symptoms of these two different types of disorders either occur at the same time as each other, or within a few days of each other

What Treatment Is There?

The Psychotic symptoms are treated as they would be if the person was suffering from psychosis alone (e.g. antipsychotic medication, cognitive-behavioural therapy).

The Mood symptoms are also treated as if the person was suffering from a mood disorder alone (e.g. antidepressant medication, electro-convulsive therapy).

Do People Recover?

This is hard to judge, because schizoaffective disorders have the two componants to them. However, the answer is probably mostly no, although the psychosis and the mood disorders can be treated, the condition is rarely cured, but managed, with the person going for periods of time free from symptoms of either.
