Stuttering (Stammering)

What Is Stuttering?

Stuttering is when a persons speech is disrupted by them frequently getting 'stuck' while trying to pronounce a word, or them repeating or 'dragging out' particular sounds or words.

It should be noted that stuttering is a perfectly normal phase that many children go through between the ages of 3 and 4. This normally goes on its own pretty quickly. It only becomes a problem if it goes on for a longer time or starts when a child is older.

How Common Is Stuttering?

About 1 in 100 school children have astutter. It is 4 times more likely in boys than it is in girls.

Can It be Treated?

Possibly.

Nothing has really been proven to work although some people claim speech and language therapy, psychoanalysis, or psychodynamic therapy can help. It really depends on what the doctor or expert thinks is the reason behind the stutter. Of course medical reasons should be checked out before looking for possible psychological reasons.

Despite all the available treatment roughly 1 in 33 adults have a problem with a stutter.
