After breakfast, luggage packed, we went to inspect our new transportation - two massive air-conditioned four wheel drives. The trip to the Faiyum from Cairo was fascinating. No pictures of that I’m afraid - I hadn’t got the knack of pointing my camera from a moving vehicle and hoping for the best!
On the way to Faiyum we stopped at the Pyramid of Hawara where we were accompanied not only by the wheel-based military but by a twin-propeller military helicopter which hovered over the pyramid for the duration. We also stopped to inspect the rournd-topped obelisk on the way into el Faiyum town (sorry, for some reason I didn’t take a picture) and the famous water wheels of el Faiyum (ancient Crocodopolis).
Our hotel, the Auberge du Lac was an impressive building situated on the lake itself with gardens leading down to the water. Unexpectedly, it was extremely windy, although warm, reinforcing the impression that the lake was more like the sea, with its white-horses and little fishing boats bobbing up and down.
