Kellis was a revelation - I had not previously contemplated the ancient coptic sites, but they are absoltuely fascinating and very beautiful. If you spend any time in Egypt you become accustomed to the lack of arches in Dynastic building projects, but Coptic Kellis is full of them and looks rather exotic as a result. In short, Kellis is unexpectedly lovely. One of my fondest non-archaeological memories of this holiday was swimming in the hot spring at the Mut III hotel in the dark, looking up at the stars with tiny bats diving low over the surface of the water. Purest magic. |
