Kharga p.m.

We travelled to “fossil mountain” where we were all completely astonished by the fossil shells that we found there.  It was great to actually get a feel not merely for the archaeology of Egypt but of its serious prehistory - the stuff that happened long before man was around, the story of the formation of Egypt itself. Fascinating stuff. We went on to see Hibis, the only Persian temple still standing in the Western Desert (and almost unique in Egypt), albeit held up by scaffolding at the moment.

This holiday was my first exposure to Egypt’s ancient Christian past - but at Al-Bagawat the sheer scale and magnificence of the necropolis (over 260 chapels over family tombs) was a true insight like no others into Egypt’s coptic past.
