To Dakhleh

By now, the astonishing variety, shapes and textures that make up the Western Desert were no surprise, but they were still absolutely gorgeous. We stopped en route to Dakhleh to visit the cemetary of Gebel Al-Muzawaqa where skeletons still lie in their original burial chambers (the more famous decorated tombs were closed for restoration).  One tomb, a chld with the skull resting at its feet, was particularly eerie but the site gave a marvellous insight into the nature of non-royal Egyptian burial practises. (see Day 7 part 2 for the afternoon’s travels)
