Defensive battle won by Claymores

Sat, April 12 - Claymores 16 Admirals 3

The game was not the prettiest or best football game but was certainly entertaining and I feel that the Claymores are in a healthy position as they challenge to retain the World Bowl.

The game was dominated early on by the defense's, it always takes the offense a while to hit its stride. I particularly enjoyed the the Admirals going backwards on offense as Sacca (Amsterdams QB) was sacked on the first down he played and a further seven more times during the game. The defense was led by Defensive End Keith Powe who kept breaking through the line of srimmage to harrass Sacca.

The Claymores offense seemed pretty much the same as last year combining a short passing game, to alot of different receivers, with some serious power running. The latter a little surprising considering the lack of Siran Stacy (who has now returned to the team after the charges of assault in California had been dropped) and the new running back Mazio Royster being placed on Injured Reserve. Ron Dickerson and Jared Kaaiohelo both returning from the team last year did a good job running the ball and blocking for each other. The first score of the game was Kaaiohelo from a yard or so out, the offensive line did such a good job blocking that he entered the end zone basically untouched. The second Claymores touchdown also involved Kaaiohelo laying a block on both Amsterdam safeties to spring Dickerson around the corner and into for clinching score. I must say though that I did notice Dickerson running with the ball held away from his body asking for the ball to be stripped. Last year it was Kaaiohelo that had slipper hands but in this game he seemed to show signifigant improvement.

Returning player highlights

Yo Murphy made a solid return to the team after dropping an easy ball early on, must remember to catch the ball before running up field.

Allen De Graffenreid did not catch a ball for the whole game, but seemed to be drawing close coverage. He did make a good contribution on Special Team. Allen is of course a veteran of the 95 campaign and was tied up with the Green Bay Packers last year but did not actually end up playing for them.

Purvis Hunt, he is the large immovable one on the offensive line had a good game.

Scott Couper caught two passes for 8 yards

No list could go without mentioning George Coghill, who play his usual 'robust' game. My favourite was a clean open field hit on an Amdirals Receiver a few yards from the Claymore endzone, the WR ended up on his back about 5 yards form the impact with helmet knocked clean off. Not that the tackle mattered as the receiver had been ruled down by contact about 7 yards further up field.

Other comments

The defense were lucky on a couple of occasions not to be called by the referee's for hitting out of bounds, penalty flags can ruin a game and I hope Criner will stress the need for clean play. The referee's seemed very reluctant to call holding on either offensive line but other than that the game was pretty well officiated.
